Regular contributor, Jason Haslam, gives us his top 5 tracks of the moment; Arcade Fire ? Sprawl II  (Soulwax remix) Of all of the tracks on Arcade Fire?s 2011 album ?The Suburbs?, ?Sprawl II was the one that screamed out to be remixed. I?m just surprised it took this long to happen ? but who better than Soulwax (aka. 2ManyDJs) to take the reigns and get it done ? their portfolio of indie remixes speaks for itself (MGMT ? Kids remix was a classic). The original ?Sprawl? is an indie chill-wave of a tune including swirling synths and childlike vocals ? the stuff of which that wraps hipsters up in an indie-electro frenzy, but it?s a great track, and typically epic in Arcade Fire style. This rework is infectious, it takes advantage of the female vocals with a deeper, funk influenced backdrop while the original melodies are given a spaced out makeover ? this is Soulwax after all. It comes in at roughly 105 beats per minute in traditional ?groove? style?Disco is coming back I tell ya. Listen out for bleeps, bloops, and even cowbells. Expect this to get some real rotation during festival season. It?s a slow burning banger, and I?m rating it. OFWGKTA ? Oldie The latest Odd Future instalment landed this month (The OF Tape, Vol. 2) and rightly so it?s created plenty of buzz. The album is, as expected, a rowdy and somewhat silly affair, but let?s have it correct…it?s extremely creative. Whether you find it immature, over the top, inspired or ?try hard?, nobody can deny that at the very least they?re bringing something fresh to hip-hop. For me it?s refreshing and interesting, and as a notoriously border line pretentious purveyor of rap, it?s just good to feel enthusiastic about the music again. ?Oldie? is probably not the obvious choice for a stand out track on the west coast collective?s album. It?s a 10 minute posse cut with each member delivering line after line of irrelevant hair brained themes, but skilfully so, and the attention to detail in terms of flow and lyrical ability is impressive. None more so than the return of Wolf Gang?s much missed prodigal talent, Earl. The youngest, and in my eyes, most talented MC ?comes home? and spills a verse containing so many syncopated similar sounding lines you?d be justified in thinking it was all just one long bar. It?s a dizzying effort, and had me applying a suitable screwface. The Tyler produced backdrop provides beauty in simplicity. A perfectly paced drum loop flanked by sparse horns and keys?nothing flashy, but a real head-nodder. The type of beat that a truly lyrical MC would lick his lips at. Diplo ? Express Yourself Diplo is everything a performing DJ should be. His live shows are insane, he commands crowds effortlessly, and the guy?s an absolute fruit loop. Whether it?s the dancehall influenced Major Lazer, or his Brazilian baille funk outfit ?Bonde De Role?; Diplo?s love for continental sounds always shines through and ?Express Yourself? is no different. It?s another raving festival banger drawing influences from dub and ?moombahton? (Google it) and sounds like the kind of thing that will tear Notting Hill carnival up later in the year. Can?t wait for that new Major Lazer project to come through. Open the windows, turn it up, and really piss your neighbours off. Azealia Banks ? F**k Up The Fun Continuing the Diplo ambush is Azealia Bank?s latest effort produced by the former. Azealia Banks stock is looking strong ? ?212? is sitting in the top ten of the UK download charts (which is impressive for a song that uses the word c**t so much) and the buzz surrounding her general self is close to ridiculous. Hipsters have propelled her towards the big stage, but the hype appears to be justified. She?s talented enough, and the anticipation for her upcoming LP ?1991? is steadily developing. The instrumental for this one is nothing but Diplo territory, and could quite easily have been made for long time collaborator M.I.A. Think fast paced military snares and tribal drumlines with Banks spitting a barrage of aggressive ?I?m better than you-isms? at the competition. Whether she?s top dog or not remains to be seen, but credit where it?s due, she slays this beat with an ?in the pocket flow?. She?s clearly after somebody?s crown. A-Trak feat. Juicy J & Danny Brown  -  Piss Test Ignorant subject matter, yes. It?s almost summer though, you?re allowed to get dumb silly. Besides, this one is just too fun to ignore. Set to appear on A-Trak?s forthcoming Fool?s Gold release ?Loosies?, ?Piss Test? sees 3?6 Mafia?s Juicy J spinning tales of eluding his parole officer amid fears his urinary tract could yet still retain traces of medicinal herbs. Inspiring stuff. In A-Trak?s words, the beat is straight ?trippy?, woozing it?s way alongside Juicy?s words, and a cameo from Danny Brown that had me remembering the late Pimp C?s appearance on ?Big Pimpin?. A great effort from the new guy. Der er ingen tegn på kamp, men alle er forsvundet og har efterladt deres personlige ejendele. Og hvad er der bag den aflåste ståldør, der fører til underetagen? Jeg har efterhånden ret store forventninger, når jeg sætter mig til rette med en ny Michael Kamp bog, og heldigvis er de blevet indfriet hver gang hidtil. Det blev de også med denne horrorroman fra 2. verdenskrig, som lidt overraskende står i bibliotekets børneafdeling. Kamp skriver forrygende, og jeg lagde stort set ikke bogen fra mig, da jeg først gik i gang med at læse.
