President Zardari strengthens ties with Barack Obama

President Barack Obama spoke briefly this past Monday with President Asif Ali Zardari on the sidelines of a NATO summit as the uneasy allies looked to drain the poison from their wounded relations.

Obama and Zardari "had a brief conversation," and were joined later by Afghan President Hamid Karzai to take a joint picture, National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said.

NATO invited Zardari to the summit amid signs that Pakistan could soon reopen ground supply lines into Afghanistan. Pakistan shut the routes after a November incident in which a NATO strike on its soil killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

American and NATO officials say the closure of the routes has not hurt the alliance’s war on the Taliban, but that they would be crucial to the plan to withdraw the International Security Assistance Force’s 130,000 troops by the end of 2014.

"So far, the closure of the transit routes has not had a major impact on our operations in Afghanistan," NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told reporters.

"But it goes without saying that it will be quite a logistical challenge to draw down the number of troops in the coming months and years. So we need a number of transit routes, and obviously the transit routes through Pakistan are of great importance, and
I would expect a reopening of the transit routes in the very near future," Rasmussen said.

Blowout Preventor case study ? oil and gas industrial lessons

Blowout Preventor case study - oil and gas industrial lessons
In the past, the oilfields were precarious and dangerous places. The workers known as oilmen had to wait outside the well and when the oil was struck, they allowed the of gas and oil gust out of the well. Then they waited further till the pressure dropped
enough in order to manually place pipe into the bottom to direct the gush. These purported "gushers" were stunning; however they were dangerous, deadly and inefficient. A lot of oilmen were killed and plenty of oilfields were damaged. In the April of 1861, a
blowout in West Pennsylvania initiated a fire that became the cause of a dozen of employees.
Possibly the most effective acknowledged "gusher" or "blowout" happened within the Spindle top oilfield close to Beaumont, Texas. On 10th January, 1901, a well was drilled by three men for Captain A. F. Lucas. The group was trying to find out
a new bit with 700 feet of drill pipe for a replacement within the hole, when the well was made to ?kick? because of subversive pressure. The well pressure finally blew the 4" drill pipe ,after a number of kicks, and out of the outlet and during a small time,
a 6 inches stream of gas and oil forced out of the well, spraying over almost hundred feet (100 ft) in air.
"An Oil Geyser Remarkable Phenomenon South of Beaumont – Gas Blows Pipe from Well and a Flow of Oil Equalied Nowhere Eise on Earth" explained by the Beaumont newspaper.
The three workers were totally illiterate and they had never heard or seen a BOP. As soon as the mud and oil starts coming out of the well, they did the sole thing they could have done ? run away and left the way unguarded. This flow of oil gushed out of
the well for whole nine days before a valve was connected to the well to prevent the flow. At this time, it was realized that if the fledgling oil trade have to grow and flourish, a way has to develop to prevent such disasters.
The dangers of these oilfields didn’t go unobserved. As the wells goes deeper and deeper, pressures due to formations were amplified and blowouts were used commonly. Many inventors tried to investigate the ways for the prevention of the blowouts. These BOPs
were considered to be put in on the wellhead to discontinue or stop the devastating gushers. None of these presented designs proved effective.

Turkey backs Pakistan?s demand for US apology

In quite an unexpected move, Islamabad got rare support from Turkey, a member-country of the NATO, on the blockade of land route for the allied forces and seeking an apology from the US government over the Salala check-post attack that killed 24 Pakistani troops.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday endorsed Pakistan?s stance, saying that they honored its decision and demand for an apology from the US over the killing of its soldiers.
The Turkish premier after signing agreements for cooperation in diverse fields observed, ?As a member of NATO, Turkey believes that such issues should be resolved through mutual dialogue?.
Replying to a query about his country would stay in Afghanistan until 2012, Erdogan said Turkey was committed to return of peace and stability to Afghanistan and would be last one to withdraw its troops from the troubled region.
Presently, Turkey has over 1,300 troops in Afghanistan and is one of the largest contributors among the 50 countries that comprise the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
The Turkish premier was of the opinion that there were different views about the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, as France wanted an immediate pullout while Germany called for a joint gradual pullout.
In his view, the withdrawal could be delayed and vowed to work along with the Afghan brothers in rebuilding their nation. He said it was also supportive of the new US initiative of $2 billion assistance to help Afghanistan stand on its own feet.
On the occasion, his Pakistani counterpart Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani informed the media the final decision to resume NATO supplies and its timing would be taken with consultation of all stakeholders.
He clarified, ?Pakistan wishes to move along with the world. We wish to make it clear that Pakistan is part of the solution, not the problem for Afghanistan?.
Reiterating Pakistan?s stance for a stable, sovereign, prosperous and independent Afghanistan, Gilani said that they were looking a political solution that was Afghan-led and Afghan owned.
The Pakistani prime minister commended support rendered by Turkish President Abdullah Gul to Pakistan at the May 20 NATO summit in Chicago. The world must have recognition of the services rendered by Pakistan in its fight against terrorism, he added.

Imran Khan criticizes President Zardari?s visit to Chicago

Apparently Imran Khan, the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is not missing any opportunity to slash the government, particularly President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani.
In his latest remarks, Imran Khan termed President Zardari’s participation in the two-day NATO summit insult of the whole nation, saying that US President Barack Obama did not appreciate Pakistan?s role despite tremendous sacrifices rendered by it in the war on terror.
Addressing a press conference, the cricketer-turned-politician said that the US was not ready to recognize the role of Pakistan in the so-called war against militancy.
In quite a defiant mood, Imran Khan cautioned that the PTI would throw the convicted premier out of the power with support of masses if the apex court rejected his appeal.
He observed, ?Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan has a very prominent status in the Islamic world and his acceptance of an invitation from a convicted PM is like accepting him as a prime minister?.
The PTI chief said the premier?s conduct vis-à-vis the judiciary was not hidden from anyone and there was no doubt he had committed contempt of court. Although Gilani is still chief executive of the country as per the Constitution of Pakistan, he has no moral grounds to hold the office, he added.
Charging the Chicago moot, he said neither Pakistan?s sacrifices were acknowledged nor President Asif Ali Zardari was given any importance during its deliberations.
Expressing disappointment that the US had given no importance to the unanimous resolution adopted by Pakistani parliament, he said, ?Neither the parliamentary resolutions nor Zardari was given importance in Chicago?.
The former captain was of the opinion that policies were made on the basis of national interests and not on fear of external forces. Making it clear that the PTI was not against army but opposed to what he called its role in political affairs.
He proposed an idea saying the caretaker government should be formed with the consultation of all political parties. He commented, ?This war was never ours but we sacrificed more than one can imagine?.
He asked the government to end coalition with the US in the so-called war against militancy, suggesting them to initiate negotiations with the tribes to restore peace and normalcy in the region.

US drone attack kills four in Pakistan

An unmanned US aircraft killed at least four people while injured many others in an attack on a militant compound in Miranshah, the troubled area of Northwestern Pakistan.
According to the media reports, the drone fired two missiles on a house in Tabai, killing at least four alleged assailants and injuring many others.
The reports quoting local administration officials confirmed the early morning attack.
This area is being considered the most notorious stronghold of militants in the tribal belt of the country to which the US thinks it the key centre for Taliban and Al-Qaeda officials to plan attacks inside Afghanistan.
It was the third drone strike since the Pakistani parliament approved new terms of engagement with the United States and made a call for a halt to attacks of unmanned aircrafts.
However, its timing is crucial as President Asif Ali Zardari is currently in Chicago to attend the two-day NATO summit on Afghanistan.
Pakistan believes the drone attacks are harmful and dent the government?s efforts to separate tribes from the terrorists.
At the same time, such attacks violate the country?s sovereignty, target civilians and fuel anti-American sentiments.
Pakistan and the US are perturbed allies and are still taking steps to repair a serious crisis in ties over last year?s secret US raid that captured and killed Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and NATO?s cross-border attacks at Salala check-post in November, 2011 that killed 24 Pakistani troops.
In quick and hard response, Pakistan blocked the land route for NATO supplies, closing the port of Karachi as a way to ship goods to international forces battling in Afghanistan.
Although the US and Pakistani officials expressed optimism that all the outstanding issues would soon be resolved.
However, the American administration rejected Pakistani proposal to charge several thousand dollars for each NATO container crossing the border.
Furthermore, the US officials categorically refused to issue an explicit apology for the killing of 24 Pakistani soldiers.
In recent months, the frequency of the drone attacks has diminished, however its complete halt is unlikely.
According to statistics, 45 drone attacks were carried out in 2009 while 101 in 64 in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

NATO leaders determined to help Afghanistan regain control

NATO leaders vowed Monday to stand by Afghanistan as it takes control of its own destiny, backing a plan to hand Afghans the lead for security in the war-torn country from mid-2013. In a Chicago summit declaration, US President
Barack Obama and his NATO military allies ratified an ?irreversible? roadmap to ?gradually and responsibly? withdraw 130,000 combat troops by the end of 2014.
But they also ordered military officers to begin planning a post-2014 mission to focus on training, advising and assisting Afghan troops to ensure the government can ward off a resilient Taliban insurgency.?As Afghans stand up,
they will not stand alone,? Obama told the gathering of more than 50 world leaders, focused on ending a decade of war that has left over 3,000 coalition soldiers and tens of thousands of Afghans dead.
British Prime Minister David Cameron, whose country provides the second biggest contingent after the United States, declared: ?We will not desert them.? But while the Western alliance coalesced around an exit strategy, they struggled
to convince Pakistan to reopen a vital supply route into Afghanistan, although NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen voiced optimism it would happen ?in the very near future.? The 28 NATO leaders and their 22 partners in the war, as far afield as Australia, Georgia
and South Korea, issued a final statement saying Afghans will be in ?lead for security nationwide? by mid-2013.
Though NATO troops will gradually shift focus to training and support, alliance officials stressed that foreign soldiers would still participate in combat operations when needed until late 2014. The two-day summit gave Obama a
platform to show a war-weary American public that he has global support for his plan to end the war ahead of a tough re-election campaign against Republican Mitt Romney in November. Chicago was under tight security as thousands of people protested during the
summit, with arrests and scenes of clashes between anti-war demonstrators and riot police on Sunday.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Hina Rabbani Khar call for US apology over NATO strike

In quite an unexpected move, Chairman Pakistan Peoples? Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar have called for a US apology over cross border attack at Salala check-post that killed 24 Pakistani troops.
Clarifying that Pakistan doesn?t want permanent blockade of NATO supplies, the foreign minister said Pakistan still seeks apology from Washington.
In an exclusive interview to a private TV channel here, Khar said Pakistan?s sovereignty should be respected and the public reaction comes out when sovereignty of the country is violated.
The minister informed that Pakistan?s parliament had urged improved and enhanced ties with the international community but on mutual bases. The parliament thoroughly reviewed Pakistan?s relations with the US and ISAF (International Security Assistance Forces).
Khar said that Pakistan is still under pressure regarding restoration of land route for allied forces. She observed, ?We want to tell the world that Pakistan is also a coalition partner to ensure peace in Afghanistan which is also in the better interest of the region?.
She categorically rejected the criticism over President Asif Ali Zardari?s participation in NATO summit, saying those criticizing the Pakistan?s attendance want to drag the country into backwardness.
Hina Rabbani Khar continued that resumption of supply line for foreign forces was not the issue only between Islamabad and Washington but it is a matter of over 50 countries. If Pakistan is kept at distance from the international community, its stance could not be well understood, she added.
In the meantime, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has made similar demand from Washington. Addressing a ceremony, he voiced concerns against the US drone attacks, saying the strikes were a violation of Pakistan?s sovereignty and independence.
Bilawal stated that questions were being raised on Pak-US friendship following the unilateral operation in Abbottabad, adding that ties between the two countries had been passing through a critical phase.
He observed, “I urge President Obama to show some courage. I understand he is running for reelection but if he is the same man who inspired the world with his message of hope & change, the future of the NATO mission in Afghanistan should be more important than poll numbers. Pakistan deserves an apology”.
The PPP chairman said that Pakistan was determined to eliminate terrorism and his mother Benazir Bhutto struggled for the uplift of woman and strengthened democracy.

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar terms NATO summit a successful visit

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar appeared optimistic and sounded positive about the outcome of the attendance of Pakistani delegation in the headship of President Asif Ali Zardari in the two-day NATO summit, held in Chicago, America.
Without explaining the bad press that has dogged the Pakistani delegation during its visit, she observed, ?When there?s a debate about Afghanistan taking place, in your opinion, should a country like Pakistan, which is a responsible regional player, an important neighbor, and a country that has huge stakes in peace and stability in Afghanistan, not participate??
In her view, they had the highest stakes among the 60 countries that participated in the summit. She said the spillover effect of unsteadiness in Afghanistan is instant in Pakistan while the effect that too in Pakistan should be instantaneous if there is stability and peace in Afghanistan.
She said she would not agree with anyone at all who says that Islamabad should not go in such a gathering. Pakistan is a key neighbor of Afghanistan and is a responsible regional player, she added.
While taking umbrage to how the NATO summit was discussed in Pakistan, she observed, ?The US side, the NATO secretary general and the government said that this was an unconditional invite?.
She, however, said that there was a discussion when they would announce the resumption of Ground Lines of Communication (CLOC).
The minister said they had proven that they were going to revisit foreign policy in a very transparent way by giving people confidence and moving forward in straightforward way.
She noted, ?What we need to do is engage with the world, in giving our perspective on what the reality checks are and the challenges are, and how in a partnership way, with tools and frameworks that are acceptable to both parties, and that is pursuing mutual interests?.
Khar said that Pakistan wants to give a strong message to the world that the future of Afghanistan was vital for it and it would work to enable peace and stability in the region. She clarified that they had been doing that at great cost to Pakistan.
While replying to a query, the minister described that no hostile attacks were made on Pakistan during speeches and remarks at the NATO summit.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan offers lessons to Pakistani lawmakers

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has advised Pakistan?s political leadership to avoid going too far in their rivalry, saying it costs them the democratic system itself.
His address to Pakistani parliament was nothing short of a scolding by an elder brother. He, who has already completed two highly successful terms as premier since 2003 and is currently in his third, enjoys good ties with the Pakistani government and opposition alike.
In his ad-lib address, delivered in Turkish, translated into Urdu by an interpreter, to a joint session of parliament, he had plenty of advices for an increasingly irritable opposition.
He observed, ?The real role of the opposition is not to criticize the government merely for the sake of criticism but to point out the ills that need to be corrected?.
In his view, a strong democratic system in Pakistan could lead to an equally strong economic system that could benefit its people in the longer runs.
He advised the youngsters to come forward and participate in the national democratic process, saying there was heavy responsibility on the nation?s lawmakers.
Commending the huge sacrifices rendered by Pakistan in fight against terrorism during the recent years, he added that they understand the pain of Pakistan and will continue to stand by with them in coming days.
Assuring that Turkey and Pakistan would stand together in the fight against, he noted, ?Terrorism and the trilateral arrangement among Pakistan, Turkey and Afghanistan would continue to build towards regional peace?.
The Turkish premier expressed hopes that the defence cooperation between the two countries would get stronger and people-to-people contacts and ties at the level of their business communities and youth would be increased in the coming days.
The joint session had a calming effect on the burgeoning tension between the treasury and opposition benches. It was clearly visible in the sitting, as not only PML-N parliamentarians were present but Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was also attending it.
The opposition, particularly the PML-N, has raised hell including walking out, protests and sloganeering for the resignation of Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, following he was convicted by the Supreme Court in contempt of court case.
Turkey is also a member of NATO, whose supply route in Afghanistan has been blocked by Pakistan for six months now. Reports claimed that his visit was meant to cool hyped political tempers.

President Zardari offers no quarter in NATO declaration

President Asif Ali Zardari made no promises in Chicago summit, rejecting intense pressure and NATO?s public call for resuming land routes in the summit declaration.
The president in his short address to leaders from over 50 countries did not give any indication that Pakistan would resume supply line for foreign forces battling in Afghanistan.
He stated, ?Pakistan believed in partnerships based on trust and respect that will secure the future of our people?. However, Zardari did address the pressing matter of the reopening of NATO supply line, saying Islamabad had asked negotiators to finalize a deal with America.
The president added that the Defence Committee of the Cabinet (DCC) had decided to direct the relevant officials to finalize negotiations for resumption of the Ground Lines of Communication (GLOC).
Calling the botched air raid a serious setback, he said that they were forced to review their engagement and cooperation with the US. In his view, the parliament spoke in favor of cooperation and partnership, adding that the government was bound by the advice of parliament.
He commented, ?Our parliament has also recommended that foreign fighters and non-state actors seeking to destabilize Afghanistan and the region, if found on our soil, must be expelled. We are devising a comprehensive plan for this purpose?.
Zardari was of the opinion that they would require the support of the international community both in terms of resources and capacity building, aiming at the economic well-being of the people of the region affected by the militancy.
He expressed support of all efforts for peace and reconciliation in the war-torn Afghanistan, saying Pakistan?s fate was inter-linked with Afghanistan.
He noted, ?We firmly believe that only an inclusive intra-Afghan dialogue can lead to sustainable peace in Afghanistan?.
In the meantime, US president Barack Obama and his 27 military allies directed concerned officials to start planning a post-2014 mission with a focus on training, advising and assisting Afghan troops.
However, newly elected French President Francois Hollande denied backing down from his decision to pull troops out in 2012, indicating a sign of growing impatience within the coalition partners.

President Obama urges Pakistan to resume NATO supplies

US President Barack Obama and his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari met shortly on Monday on the sidelines of the NATO summit, but made no progress towards resolving their diplomatic standoff over land route for allied forces battling in Afghanistan.
Pakistan?s hard stance on resumption of supplies for foreign forces threatened to outshine the American President?s efforts on the last day of the NATO summit to finalize plans of withdrawing international troops from Afghanistan.
While addressing to more than 50 world leaders, President Obama expressed his frustration at what aides view as Pakistani inflexibility by publicly offering thanks to Russia and other Central Asian countries for providing critical transit of war supplies into Afghanistan in the six months since Pakistan closed its ground routes following the NATO attacks that killed 24 Pakistani troops.
While speaking to the media, Obama said the United States and Pakistan were making diligent progress on a deal. However, he clarified that he was not looking resolution of the dispute during the NATO summit.
The deadlock over the land route for NATO forces has distracted from a carefully choreographed moot in which Islamabad and Washington understood the strained relations.
President Obama observed, ?We didn?t anticipate that the supply line issue was going to be resolved by this summit. We knew that before we arrived in Chicago. But we are actually making diligent progress on it?.
He further stated that they need to work through some of the tensions that have inevitably arisen after one decade of their military presence in the region.
Earlier US media had reported that President Obama was struggling to balance the American ties with two crucial but difficult allies.
Pakistan is not a NATO member but was invited to the summit because of its influence in next-door Afghanistan and its role until last year as the major supply route to landlocked NATO forces there. Pakistan closed those routes after a U.S. attack on the Pakistani side of the border killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in November.
The last-minute invitation from NATO to join the Chicago talks was a sign of hope that the rift had healed. But it hasn’t. And Obama’s dealings with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari made that clear on Monday.

Rapporten kritiserer kontrollen

Prime Minister Gilani challenges PML-N to bring a no-confidence motion

Challenging the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to bring a no-confidence motion against him, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said he is an elected premier and will go in the same way.
While speaking to the media along with PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, he observed, ?If anyone has the courage to call for a no-confidence motion against me or call for the president?s impeachment, they should do so?.
The prime minister said he would remain the chief executive of the country as long as he enjoyed the support of the parliament and coalition parties.
In his view, he could not be removed from his office through undemocratic methods because gone were the days when the president dismissed prime ministers under Article 58(2B).
Reiterating his previous stance, the prime minister asked the PML-N to resign from assemblies before going for a long march. There is an elected government in the country and not a dictatorship, he added.
Gilani said he knew well that the PML-N would not dare go for a long march, as participation of the Punjab government against any act against the federation would be tantamount to treason.
He clarified that the court had not disqualified him, saying he was convicted for an act that was legal and constitutional. He observed, ?The prime minister has immunity on actions taken in discharge of official duties?.
The premier said the decision to reopen land route for allied forces battling in Afghanistan had not been taken yet and the invitation to Chicago summit was unconditional.
In the meantime, he showed agreement with the formula floated by Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain to end load shedding in the country. In his view, it was not just an issue for the government but for all political parties.
Gilani was of the opinion that the government took its responsibility and was making efforts to resolve it considering it a major challenge.
However, he said that provinces were free to generate electricity and questioned why provinces were not producing electricity and blaming the Centre for the electricity shortage.
