I can guarantee you that every single application is being read very carefully, and it is an enormous task that we take with the utmost sincerity and humility. Galaxy Tab 2.0, Samsung?s signature tablet is your badge for this year; which comes with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and can be tested in more detail during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in late February. The tablet?both in WiFi and 3G versions?will have a seven-inch screen, which is the smallest tablet from Samsung. It keeps the dual-core processor, the camera and screen resolution intact from the previous models. Tab 2.0 will be marketed first in the UK in March. The company disclosed its new ventures as well like the Music Hub and Reader Hub. Music Hub will be preloaded in the tablet first with its 13 million songs and Reader Hub with 2.3 million books. Among other launches were Game Hub that is still in planning phase, and the Video Hub that will offer over 1,000 movies on the initial start this year. In the same trend Samsung released a new application for televisions called Youzee, a service like Netflix, which will let the users view TV shows and movies unlimited for 10 Euros a month. This service will also be available to the phones and tablets. This is a step from the Korean company to stay ahead of its competitors who offer the television services. Samsung is planning to unleash its high-end television models ES 8000 and ES 7000 in Europe, come spring. These TVs will boast 75-inch screens, dual core processors and connection to the Web. The big news however, was the chamber that makes the upper edge of the TV, This chamber will serve as a Kinect-like sensor that will enable the viewer to change channels and turn up and down the volume without remote control but with hand gestures and voice recognition. Is that why Facebook is hesitant about mobile applications, because all of the ‘bugs’ aren’t exterminated from systems? The New York Times ran a story, featuring Citigroup’s mobile application mishap.   Citi mistakenly overcharged iPad-leveraging customers (and others?); Citi has traced the error to a young, iPad application.  Other mobile applications as well as the bank’s central systems were not influenced and remain secure the brand advises. As we know, numbers can get confusing; we may be bewildered by Facebook’s number of active users; we may also be confused by how many of Citi customers were actually affected.  As the Times article relays, Citi declined to release the actual number of customers influenced by the error.  Additionally, some consumers, not using an iPad device, were overcharged. Citi spokesmen voice doing all within the bank’s efforts to address the matter (that is now fixed) and reimburse all overcharged and inconvenienced consumers, consumers who are quickly getting familiar with mobile devices as these global mobile statistics reflect. Are banks trying to keep up with the quick-footed digital times, while security and efficiency lags behind?  The Times did another story on mobile device hacking a few weeks ago; it seems hackers can get in your phone just as easily as your laptop and desktop computers.  Citi is familiar with such scenarios as well, addressing matters last summer due to a breach in its systems, where thousands of North American credit-card customers’ info was ‘hacked.’ Perhaps Citi did not disclose an exact number of consumers (using mobile devices and beyond) affected because it’s hard to figure an exact number.  David Albertazzi advises financial institutions on tech and regulatory issues.  He states, “It’s very challenging to really pinpoint the number of customers affected.  It’s the nature of the beast.” That does not seem very reassuring; maybe with the Facebook IPO so brand new, the social media brand does not want to breach the mobile application topic just yet; Facebook is one of the most popular social sites; the brand is savvy to the power of mass information and the ease at which customers can voice dissatisfaction with brand-related services and products.  As one online commenter relayed, the application is “very unreliable.”  Whether that remains to be true on a mass scale is yet to be seen, however in such ‘social’ times, brands can’t afford to displease even a minutia of the masses. Heins, who has worked at RIM in the capacity of Chief Operations Officer, will now take the reins of the company in the new position and already he has a huge task ahead of him. The company is in a spiral downfall for the last two years since Google and Apple have taken the control of the smartphone industry, the technology that once was RIM?s forte. The company?s shares in the stock market plummeted 75 percent in 2011 and the trend seems to continue this year because of the dearth of competitive products. Apple and Android rule the contemporary market with a number of devices to address every segment out in the open. In addition, Microsoft is taking big strides to gouge a reasonable share in the market. However, there performance is still underwhelming as compared to the two major players. The new CEO, after taking over the position, took to the rostrum and announced his big ambitious plans. Hire some new faces to Team-Blackberry Suffice it to say that investors aren’t terribly impressed that the new CEO of RIM is a company insider. So if Heins is serious about turning the company around, he needs to take some bold steps. And that includes surrounding himself with some outsiders who can bring some fresh, new ideas to the company. Clearly what RIM has been doing isn’t working. 2. Application Development One of the biggest reasons why Blackberry is ousted off the market is the paucity of applications for the Blackberry OS. Aside from the outlook and lack of touch screen in most of RIM?s handsets, the absence of applications is keeping the customers away from Blackberrys. Android and iOS have around a million applications between the poles and this fact is one of the strong suits of the operating systems. Even Microsoft has populated its databases of applications to almost 50,000. 3. Rev-up the pace The release of Blackberry 10, which is scheduled in the latter half of 2012, is one quarter too late in the ultra-competitive market. For the company to sustain the spark in the market, it has to launch the OS as early as the end of first quarter of 2012 or latest by the second quarter. However, it still remains unpredictable what Android and iPhone bring to the table by that time. iPhone 5 and Ice Cream Sandwich are due in this half and Windows Phone OS is also release it?s the Tango update during this period. 4. Cell Phone Carriers Once upon a time, Blackberry was the sweat child of AT&T and Verizon. Unfortunately, that time has passed by and iPhone and Android has taken its place. The carriers these days are a major cog in the machine of a successful smartphone company. Customers tend to purchase phones on subsidized rates, signing contracts with the carriers for the usage of their services. Although AT&T still has confidence in the company, it needs some attractive offerings from Blackberry to lure customers to the handsets, applications being one of them. Android as an option Heins needs to make a decision and he needs to make it fast. BlackBerry 10 is still months away. And even if it was available tomorrow, the platform has little to no support from developers. Much like Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop did when he took over at Nokia, Heins might want to cut his losses with BlackBerry 10 and build BlackBerry phones using Google Android software. The biggest benefit out of the gate is that BlackBerry users would finally get access to hundreds of thousands of apps. The apps issue shouldn’t be underestimated. Just look at Microsoft’s struggle to make Windows Phone relevant. The software has been out for more than a year, and Windows Phone has made only small gains in market share. By the time, BlackBerry 10 comes out, Apple and Android will have even more momentum. And Microsoft might have some momentum, too. Heins might want to consider cutting his losses to leverage a better established software platform. 6. Focus on the mainstream customers Remember those suit-wearing “crackberry” addicts? The company’s rock-solid security and messaging services won the hearts and minds of executives, lawyers, bankers, and Congressional leaders. Even the President of the United States said that the Secret Service would have to pry his BlackBerry from his fingers if they threatened to take it away from him. Somewhere along the way, RIM got lost. It lost its focus. The company needs to get back on track by once again appealing to these core business customers. But now, the company needs to realize that it’s competitors Apple and Android have redefined the market. And business phones aren’t just for emailing and messaging. People expect a lot more from their smartphones. And many really want to carry one device that can help them manage both their professional and personal lives. If RIM is serious about a come back, it needs to go back to its roots. This means keeping aspects of its devices that its core audience love: superior QWERTY keypad, security and strong messaging services. At the same time the company needs to add elements it has been missing: a good touch screen, easy-to-use interface, plenty of apps, and a good browser. Outsourcing the Blackberry OS One of the major reasons for Android to give a hard time to Blackberry, and iOS for that matter, is the open-source approach by Google. The number of Android-powered smartphones has always been more than iPhones and Blackberrys because Android can be and is adapted by any company from Samsung to Sony to HTC. RIM executives have already said that if they’re approached about the new BlackBerry 10 software that they would consider licensing it to a third party. But what about the older elements of RIM’s technology? The company could consider licensing its BlackBerry Enterprise server services to other hardware companies. This would allow Android device makers to offer services, such as RIM’s popular BlackBerry Messenger. The company’s network architecture was criticized recently following a major worldwide outage of its services. But this set-up, which funnels all messaging traffic through RIM’s network operations centers throughout the world, also allowed RIM to build one of the most secure messaging platforms around. A project that is run by my colleague Michael Nielsen. It is a Drag n Drop Sidebar Widget for the Lotus Notes Client. When it is installed, you can drag documents from a Lotus Notes database and drop them on to targets that are displayed in the Widget. When you drop documents on the target in the Widget there are some configurable options that control what will happen. For instance you can configure the Widget to copy the dropped documents to the database-target and then immidiately run an agent on the copies. It is a really cool widget with a lot of potential.
