Though the search engine giant were a little late to the clouding competition with the likes of Apple and Microsoft already streaking in the market with their respective services, iCloud and SkyDrive, the company did not need a promotion trumpet or a herald to announce the service. However, the most awaited online storage service came under tight scrutiny and criticism from the experts all over the world right from the starting date. Google Drive?s terms and conditions for the use of services have attracted the opprobrium from the tech gurus all over the world. According to the published terms and conditions, to which the users will have to agree in order to avail the cloud service, say clearly in black and white that all the content that is stored in Google Drive will eventually be Google?s property, as long as it is on the GDrive and even after the user terminates the service contract. On the other hand, services like SkyDrive and DropBox value users? privacy and hold their rights to share the content uploaded on their clouds to the very first notch. Following are the excerpts from SkyDrive, DropBox and Google Drive?s terms and conditions for a clear comparison. DropBox “Your Stuff & Your Privacy: By using our Services you provide us with information, files, and folders that you submit to Dropbox (together, “your stuff”). You retain full ownership to your stuff. We don’t claim any ownership to any of it. We also don’t control, verify, or endorse the content that you and others make available on the service.” Microsoft values the users? privacy and do not have any right whatsoever to the  content uploaded to their service. Now see what Google says on its clouding service. Google Drive “Your Content in our Services: When you upload or otherwise submit content to our Services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide licence to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes that we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content. The rights that you grant in this licence are for the limited purpose of operating, promoting and improving our Services, and to develop new ones. This licence continues even if you stop using our Services (for example, for a business listing that you have added to Google Maps).” To have the right to any file or folder uploaded on Google?s service is not the biggest issue in discussion here, what bothers most experts is the last sentence in the terms. The company does not have the rights to change or publish users? content but also retains the right to do so even after users terminate the service. Most of the users who only will use the only storage to save some videos and music might not bother for the details, but those like musicians and artists and scientists who have worked on some project might want to have their intecllectual rights intact in this case. However, Google being Google poses more threat to each one of the aforementioned than any other in the bunch. Apple introduced its clouding services last year in the shape of iCloud, closely followed by DropBox. Though SkyDrive has been in the market for more than five years, the complete clouding service started last year. However, all eyes were waiting what Google brings to the table. The company did not disappoint with what it brings to its customers. The service is an enhancement to the Google Docs services that has been on the web for almost seven odd years. Google Drive, or GDrive for e-slang, works both on web and as a stand-alone application. Now you can not only save your Microsoft Office files on the internet but there are a number of file options that are supported on the platform. The service also boasts compatibility to different files and their management in folders, what Google calls collections. There is a search bar on the top to search for files and folders in the GDrive. Moreover, it syncs with the desktop or any other local drive seamlessly and has the functionality of backing up the files and folders. More on that in the latter part of the article but first let?s see how to get started with the service. Unlike other clouding services Drive is neither platform bound nor specific user bound. It can be used all over the world by anyone who has web presence. First of all go to drive.google.com to activate the service. Once it is activate, it can be accessed. It offers both web-based and local-based drive system. Activating the service activates the web service de facto. However for the stand alone application the user has to download and install the app. Go to drive.google.com to download the application, available at the link, “Download Google Drive” in the left sidebar. After a short installation, the application will appear in the form of a folder like icon on your desktop. Launching the application opens a window on the desktop. You can create files and folders of your liking in the stand-alone application. Once your are connected to the internet, the data in the desktop app will automatically sync with Web drive. Google offers 5GB of free storage initially and there are tools available to systematically place the data in an order. Any files created on the Drive do not consume the storage offered to the users. Photoshop, movies, photos — you name it. Google Drive supports the storage and viewing of all the popular file types. So, you can upload a movie to your Drive and play it back within your browser, no matter where you are. The Google Goggle is basically a search feature in the Drive that can be used to find files and folders in a quicker manner. Moreover, the user can also use the feature to find text other information on files. However, the data finding application is not so worthwhile. You can share your files and folders with your buddies and family. All the files and folders saved on GDrive can be shared by simply right-clicking the item and selecting share. Choose the user of your choice to share the file or folder with. The user can remotely access the files from any platform, provided that platform supports the format of the file. The company started its clouding service in 2007 but commenced the official Wave 5 (Build 16.2.2907.1020) in November last year. It had been rumoured for a couple of months that the company was planning to introduce paid storage. Now that official announcement is in everybody?s grasp, the tariff is as following: New users will get 5GB of free storage Existing users, as of April 22, will be offered up to 25 GB of storage for free, should they choose so 20 GB addition storage will be charged at $10 per year 50 GB addition storage will be charged at $25 per year 100 GB addition storage will be charged at $50 per annum Moreover, the company also released the desktop client of the SkyDrive on Windows platform. According to the company, the application will be able to handle the SkyDrive service from the desktop, in addition to the web browser-based operation. The users will be able to manage files and folders in applications as they do on the operating system. Following is the list of features the desktop client, downloadable from Microsoft?s website, offers to Windows users: Ability to access SkyDrive directly from Windows Explorer ? photos, documents, and other files Option to add new files to SkyDrive by dragging them to the SkyDrive folder Ability to organize files and folders in SkyDrive, just like any other folder Option to connect back to the PC if the user forgets to put something in SkyDrive Microsoft has been thriving to build SkyDrive as a full-fledged service just like iCloud. However, the competition is beefing up as Google is rumoured to be on the verge of releasing its own clouding service called GDrive. Google has already aired the Google Play which presumably integrate with the clouding service as well. Microsoft also announced that SkyDrive app for Mac OS X Lion is also available on the web.
