On my way from work today I heard a somewhat funny segment about how companies increasingly were looking for ?ninjas? when hiring new people. In fact the job ads mentioning ?ninjas? were up 2500% compared to last year ? not to mention the jedis and rock stars who also seem to be in great demand. [...]

A test of Pakistan?s diplomacy

Turkey, the close friend of Pakistan and important ally of NATO forces, desperately wants the land route for allied forces battling in Afghanistan to be resumed.
However, the hype created by the establishment, opposition and a section of media after the highly condemnable Salala check-post attack is standing in the way to resumption of supply-line.
Keeping in view the political, economic and military clout of Pakistan, we should have given a thought out response to the allied countries.
However, the incumbent under the pressure of those who matter blocked the supply line for NATO forces. Furthermore, Pakistan Army declined to join the NATO investigation into the incident, rejecting the explanation given by the probe.
A boycott to Bonn Conference and tripartite talks were among the other rash decisions taken by Pakistan.
Over the recommendations of Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS), parliament sought an apology from the United States and a halt to the drone attacks. Ultimately, Pakistan is facing the consequences of unrealistic decisions.
Drone striking is another outstanding issue between the two countries. The parliamentary panel asked the government to put an halt to drone service as a precondition for resuming the land route for allied forces.
However, it was nothing to avail. Several drone attacks have been carried out in recent days after the committee announced its demands. The US believes that attacks through unmanned air crafts are a vital tool in the war against terrorism.
The Americans have decided to pursue a light-track plan in Afghanistan, as its troops would end their battle in the troubled country.
The responsibility for national security will be taken over completely by the Afghan army and police following the withdrawal of international forces.
In order to save the lives of US troops and reduce the defence budget, the Americans would rely of air strikes wherever these would be required. However, this strategy could bring out disastrous consequences.
Afghanistan is bound to fall to Taliban once the foreign forces are out along with their sophisticated weaponry system. A Taliban-dominated Kabul would serve as the strategic depth for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants who would intensify their attacks inside Pakistan.
On one hand, Pakistan should not pipe dreaming on its part while the US should also realize that this does not bode well either for the region or the international community.
The two will have to find out to continue their cooperation to rid the region of extremism and militancy.

Veena Malik?s manager fires back at Dolly Bindra?s accusations

The Indian actress Dolly Bindra, who is best known for her role in films like ?Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? and ?Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani?, recently, visited Pakistan and during her press conference in Lahore she called Veena Malik a disgrace for not only Pakistan and Indian but also for womanhood.
Now, Malik?s Public Relations manager Sohail Rashid has fired back at Bindra for unleashing a set of allegations against the actor on Saturday.
Rashid, while having a conversation with ?The Express Tribune? over the phone, said that India doesn?t know how to show hospitality to their guests at all.
Bindra stated that Malik has relations with Indian men and she gets ready to do everything in order to grab a role. Therefore, Rashid wants Bindra to be banned by the Indian government for using such a cheap language against Veena Malik.
He said, ?I have a question for Dolly Bindra: Is this the Indian culture and is she trying to show that all Indian women are like Dolly Bindra? What kind of cheap and vulgar language is she using against Veena Malik??
He added, ?I think the Indian government should ban Dolly Bindra for using such cheap and vulgar language. She is only giving a bad name to her country.?
Rashid remarked that if Bindra doesn?t stop handing out such public statements, the Pakistani actor would be forced to file a complaint against her.
?We have other means through which we can handle this case.?
?What kind of people are they? The Indians certainly don?t know how to show hospitality to their guests. Whereas, we in Pakistan, have always been respectful of our guests who have come from abroad.?
Rashid said India is simply trying to assassinate Veena Malik?s character but they don?t know that they are simply making a laughing stock of their own country at an international level.

I stedet for kun at læse om at læse i udlandet, stiftede denne gruppe sidste år konferencen “Nordic Study Abroad Conference“.

Conferencing in Porto

I have just returned from Porto in Portugal, where I attended the III International Conference on Media and Communication: “Media and Journalism in an evolving ecosystem”. For me personally, this was a very special conference from the beginning as it was the first time I was to present a paper at an international conference (though I have done it before on research seminars, etc.). The title of my paper was ?News Websites? Real-Time Coverage of Emergent Crisis: a Scandinavian study?, the presentation went well, and I will write more about the study later as it will be part of my PhD dissertation.Let me turn to the conference and jump straight to the conclusion: this was a very good conference, one of the best I?ve been to. It was well-organized, all the papers were of a high quality, and the social events in between the academic parts were spectacular.First, the organization. Even though the organizers could consider making the final program available a little earlier for the fourth iteration of the International Conference of Media and Communication, everything in Porto worked smoothly. They even got the Portuguese secretary of state at the opening ceremony! Great job by Professor Rui Novais and his team.Second, the academic content. Of the 16 paper presentations, there was not one presentation that did not give me something to think about, be inspired by, or use in my own research. It would be too much to go through all the interesting points here, so I?ll just remark that I?ve got quite a number of new ideas to pursue in my future research, and that I?ve met a lot of intelligent and interesting scholars to collaborate with. The conference had four keynote speakers: Dan Hallin gave a rich and inspiring account of how journalism is moving from its modernism into post-modernism with a move towards de-professionalization and opinionated, entertainment-oriented content (I must, however, admit that this talk reminded me very much of his keynote in Bergen last November); Mark Deuze presented his view on journalistic work in a society where media constitute an integral part of all social activity, arguing that journalists need to ?brand? themselves through e.g. social media (that this keynote was presented at a video conference just added some kind of meta layer to his very talk); Elisabeth Grabe provided an inspirational approach to analyzing image bites in political coverage, providing a methodological framework for rigorously analyzing images quantitatively; and Robert Entman convincingly showed how scandal journalism works in relation to the American presidency and argued that media need to calibrate their journalistic coverage according to the seriousness of the political misconduct.Third, the organizers had also gone to great length to make this a conference to remember for the social events. Chris Paterson from Leeds University said that in Britain, a lunch break would be 20 minutes and have the worst food in town, and in Denmark it?s quite the same (even though we usually stretch the break to be 40 minutes); but in Porto, the lunch breaks were two hours of dining at great restaurants (one of them outside in the restaurant?s garden). On the second day of the conference, this lavish lunch was even followed by a guided tour around town and a boat ride on the river Duoro. This was a great success, and everybody enjoyed that the organizers had also scheduled activities outside of the conference rooms. I think this photo, which was taken right after the boat ride, epitomizes the overall feeling at the conference:Life can be sweet, even when you?re conferencing.

Conference on climate change

Conference on climate change
Climate change is a global issue and is of great concern for the entire international community. The global warming is causing widespread problems such as faster glacier melting, sea level rise, shortage of fresh water, prolonged droughts, ravaging floods,
more frequent and intense forest fires, high intensity storms, extreme heat episodes, agricultural disruption, spread of infectious diseases and biodiversity loss. A lot of collective and concerted efforts are required to reduce the impact of this hazardous
phenomenon.
Federal Minister for Science and Technology Mir Changez Khan Jamali voiced these concerns during a three-day International Conference onClimate Change: Opportunities and Challenges held at National University of Sciences and Technology here on Wednesday. Pakistan
Council for Science and Technology is hosting the mega event. Mr. Jamali was the chief guest at the occasion.
The minister said that according to scientific studies the average global temperature had risen by about 10oC during the past century and that increase was mostly due to fossil fuel burning and deforestation. He maintained that although it was a well known
fact that the developing countries were least responsible for global warming contributing only 10% of annual global carbon dioxide emissions, they were the ones that are most susceptible to theenvironmental, social and economic impacts of this climatic change
mainly due to their geographical location and socio-economic fragility.
Professor Dr Mudassir Asrar, Chairperson Pakistan Council for Science and Technology, PCST welcomed all the guest speakers and other participants to the event. She extended her gratitude to the Ministry of National Disaster Management and Global Change Impact
Study Centre for their cooperation with PCST in organising the conference. In her address, she said that the climate change was irreversibly harming Pakistan. She said that according to intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) assessment report, the
glacier melt in the Himalayas was projected to increase flooding and affect water resources within the next two to three decades.Realising the dire need for addressing the issue of climate change and its serious repercussions locally and globally, the chairperson
said PCST had hosted the international conference to bring together the world?s top scientists in all relevant fields for sharing their knowledge and experiences based on scientific evidence. In his remarks, Rector NUST Engr Muhammad Asghar welcomed all participants
to the event and felicitated Chairperson PCST for the conduct of the conference. He pinned high hopes that the event would serve as a stepping stone towards reducing the negative effects of climate change.

So Henriette and I were at Media Evolutions ‘The Conference’ ( http://mediaevolution.se/theconference/ ) last week, and I thought it would be cool to give you guys the low-down on what was cool and such. All in all I think it was great, and the general feedback from the attendees was positive. It was full of inspiring talks, great projects and a great look into the future of digital media. So let’s get down to the particularly cool bits:

Generaly Cool Stuff

Guitar thing – WildChords

Blackberry hosted a competition, where the winner was drawn at The Conference. The idea was to build an app for the blackberry errr?tablet thingy. So these Finnish dudes built an app which teaches you, quite simply, how to play the guitar! No plugging in, nothing. Just take a guitar and play the notes as they come. It’s way cool, and you can check it out here: www.wildchords.com/

Unfortunately, they didn’t win – ‘Visit Sweden’ did, and their app will be released on the blackberry Tab thingy when it gets released in Sweden. Good for them.

note – I googled for those interested – it’s called the playbook

Another cool app was Tunaspot, which is a location-based game where you can make playlists and soundtracks, and drop them at locations. Then, passersby can pick them up and download them. Cool huh?
It’s not completely available yet, but very soon. Check them out here: www.tunaspot.com

Electric car

So MIT makes this electric car, which kind of half folds up so you can jump out the front. The cool thing is that they are doing a test in a few cities, among others Malmö so I’m looking forward to see the snazzy broom broom around! You can see a quick video of the prototype they had at The Conference here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1MSMj08BVU

Cool stuff on Day 1.

Man & Machine – Amber Case

One of the best speeches at the conference. The theme was ‘being a Cyborg’ – which was about how connected we all are in regards to the past. She spoke a lot about Steve Mann, who is a guy who has gone one step further, and wears his home made computer whilst he walks around. It started out as a massive thing which drew a lot of attention in the beginning, but has been developed to the point that he can wear it as a pair of glasses! This got me thinking – when will it end!? I spoke briefly with Amber after the talk about the point of no return – as in “If we ever start to augment our own bodies – let’s say, starting out with small implants for headphones, which gets replaced with mobile devices and on from there, where will the line be drawn? She said that she would never add anything to her body, and I think a lot of people are probably in the same boat, but still – if enough people end up trying something and it works, and is great, it wouldn’t take too long before we have a very Manga-type cyberpunk-esque future, right?

How to live a Hyper-connected Life:
The Bulletproof Executive – Dave Asprey

I thought this was really cool. Dave has ‘bio-hacked’ himself for the past few years, taking brain scans, and studying up on how to optimize his body and brain functions, and is now feeling the best he’s ever felt, regardless of the fact that he eats around 4500 calories per day (which a large part of it is beef and butter!) doesn’t exercise, and sleeps less than 5 hours a day. He came out with a set of electrodes on his head, which were hooked up to a 9 volt battery which was giving him the optimal current to put him in the right state of mind to stay focused and alert. He has, in the last few years, upgraded his IQ by 20 points, fixed his poor vision, and trimmed himself down from a massive 300 pounds of weight! Intriguing stuff huh? Read more about The Bulletproof Executive on Dave’s blog: www.bulletproofexec.com/

The Winter of our Disconnect – Susan Maushart

This was a great story about Susan, her 2 daughters and her son, who were all living a life which was mainly carried out online. They were constantly online, be it internet, gaming, phones – until one day Susan had had enough. She basically pulled the plug for 6 months, as a type of experiment, but mainly to try and get her family to connect again. It was really cool to hear what happened to the whole family – they apparently went through a stage of complete boredom, and then ended up filling the boredom with things like playing the saxophone (and apparently writing a book!). The book is available everywhere – I think I would like to give it a read. Check out her site if you want to know more: http://susanmaushart.com/

The Future of Games

Yeah, I’m a little bit of a gamer, so I definitely wanted to check this one out! =D They spoke a lot about the difference between ‘gaming’ and ‘playing’, and the fact that the majority of digital games made for kids are focused on manipulative play – and the other types (Discovery, Physical, Creative and imaginative) are very much untapped resources. Maybe the future of digital gaming marketed at children could tap into these other types, so as we don’t raise a generation of soulless, brainy kids that have good hand-eye coordination, yet no creativity. I think it’s great!

Cool stuff on Day 2 (which was better than day 1 imo)
Creation – Bill Drummond

Completely off-the-wall and funny guy. It was great and all, but I still felt it was kind of irrelevant. But still great fun. He talked about the evolution music, and how, since the iPod, music has gotten to be kind of?.commonplace. That people have gotten to be apathetic about what they listen to, skipping from track to track without really hearing what it is they are listening to. And that it has actually been heading in that direction since we started recording music. He talked about his project ‘The 17′ which is basically this: “Imagine you wake up tomorrow and all music has disappeared”. All knowledge of music is gone, and yet you still have an inkling that it existed. How would you make it? He has been making a lot of ‘one time shows’ where he would take 17 people and instruct them to sing a certain tone, all at once in the middle of a city, or in a building, and once they had sung it, that was it. No recording allowed. So it was about having the people involved to be the ones experiencing it. I like that. All of a sudden the two sides of the room were chanting together. Not so much to do with digital media, but still entertaining and thought-provoking.

New Business Opportunities with Disruptive Thinking

I loved this one, obviously. ’Disruptive thinking’?.Business Unusual’?Same thing, right?

These speeches were all about those companies who break ground in their industry, by thinking outside of the box. By not following the same methods that they always have, but by not being scared of pushing things too far – by daring to be different. And anything that invokes change is great in my books! That’s kind of all it was about?Pushing the envelope, not getting stuck in old patterns.

Funding Creativity with the Crowd

A great set of speeches regarding crowdfunding sites, and how they can help ‘The Little Guy’ get bigger. I especially liked the talk by Simon Close about getting funding for his documentary film ‘The Pirate Bay – Away from Keyboard ( TPB – AFK ). He drew in over $50.000 US in around 3 weeks for his film, by using Kickstarter? Not bad eh? They are waiting for the court decision before the release of the film – something to do with the courts not wanting the film to affect the outcome of the verdict, but see more at http://www.tpbafk.tv/blog/

There was also a fantastic section by Britta Riley from WindowFarms, which intrigued me a lot, because I’m all for green. It’s a project which teaches people how to grow a type of indoor farm, right in the window sill. Way cool. She also earned a buttload of cash for research by using Kickstarter, but it still has only gotten in about 1/4 of the money back from how much was used on the project, so if you’re into it, check out the site. You can buy kits and fertilizers and all kinds of stuff. There is also a wealth of info about how to do the whole thing yourself.

Closing Keynote with Riyaad Minty – Al Jazeera

This was probably the most poignant speech I saw at the whole conference. I have never been much of a ‘news guy’. I don’t know why. It’s never been something that I was into, although I have the sneaking suspicion that it it will be at some point. But I love the way that Al Jazeera works, and he sold it for me. I love the fact that they use peoples videos, and listen to what people are saying, instead of finding their own angles on the news based on what they think people want to hear.

Mr. Minty spoke at length about the network, and how it is that they differ from other news stations, by having the trust of the people because of the fact that they broadcast what is really out there, no matter what. Even if they get blocked in certain countries where something important is happening, they will find a way of getting the information from their sources, and also giving it out to the whole world, and to the country where they are blocked – even by radio stations if needs be. Maybe this is the way the media used to be, but lost their way somewhere along the line? Luckily enough, the internet is here to save the day yet again! With complete freedom of information, everyone is at liberty to tell their story. Everyone! That’s great, especially if we have some trusted medium which we can use to spread it. Huge fan!

All in all, I was wicked-happy with the whole thing. All the videos of all the talks are here: http://mediaevolution.23video.com/channel/3014916/the-conference-2011?p=1 so feel free to go through and get some inspiration -

Imran Khan urges for reformed Indo-Pak ties

Imran Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), on Tuesday said that the time has come to see change in ties between Pakistan and India, asking them to trust each other in order to make the region prosperous.
While speaking to Pak-India Economic Conference, the cricketer-turned politician observed, ?Time has come for new relationship between the two countries, as there is lot of common things between the two nations. We have similar background and culture?.
It was the second-day of the conference, which is being organized under the banner of Aman ki Asha, a joint venture of the Times of India and Jang Group of Pakistan.
The PTI leader, which is a revolutionary party that has recently arrived on the national stage, urged that progressive Indo-Pak relationship should be made by two powerful governments who can stand pressure and can transform words into actions.
Imran Khan said that resolution of Kashmir issue would be his top most priority if he came in power, adding that leadership of both the countries should move on to enhance bilateral ties as young generation of the two countries looked for a change.
In his view, a strong leadership is needed both in Pakistan and India to take peace initiative and resolve Kashmir disputes. There is natural affinity among people of India and Pakistan as both are seeking peace in the region.
The former captain said there was lack of trust and both the countries should take measures for bridging the trust deficit. He clarified that his party would not have political alliance with parties in the government.
In his view, there should be balance in trade between the two neighboring states and time had come for Pakistan and India to look at each other with different view point. He asserted, ?Dividends of peace are enormous and time has come for new relations and for putting an end to hatred?.
Khan was of the opinion that there were several interpretations of Jihad (holy war) but raising voice against injustice was also form a Jihad.
Chairman of Bajaj Auto Group Rahul Bajaj will chair the second session of the conference in which Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh will address the conference.
President of Geo Network Imran Aslam and Indian Member Parliament Mani Shankar Aiyar will address the final session of the conference.

Gilani expresses hope for mutual trade with India

Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Monday expressed hope that India will take measures for mutual trade, saying that the well-being Indians and Pakistanis depended on the normalization of ties.
Speaking to the 2nd Economic Conference, organized by Jang Groups and Times of India, in Lahore, the prime minister observed, ?The engine of economic growth is not fueled by regional tensions and conflicts and that it needs peace and an enabling environment?.
Gilani stated that improving ties with India was Pakistan?s policy and both the neighboring states would have to learn lessons from history.
He asserted that illiteracy and poverty must not destiny of people of Pakistan and India, saying that non-state elements were common enemies of both the countries.
The inaugural session of the two-day economic conference was attended by industrialists, entrepreneurs and traders from both countries.
The premier said the participation from the two sides shows the commitment of the private sector to develop trade relations between Pakistan and India. He expressed satisfaction over the business communities of two countries who are exploring vistas of economic cooperation.
In his view, the stable business relations between the two countries had great potential for a bright future. He observed, ?This is a region, where more than one-fifth of the world population resides and which is fast becoming one of the key drivers of the global economy?.
The prime minister was of the opinion that the presence of the business community underlined the need of peace and normalization of relations between Pakistan and India.
At a time when tensions ran high between the two neighboring states, the economic conference pushed forward the peace agenda and that of economic cooperation.
Gilani while recalling the first economic conference in December 2009 said that he had extended solid support to the idea of peace and people-to-people contact.
He asserted, ?Notwithstanding the ups and downs in our bilateral relations, our support to the cause of peace and normalization of relations with India has remained steadfast. This is because trade between our countries is to our best advantage?.
The prime minister said that Pakistan?s closest friend and strategic partner, China, was also in favor of our normalization of ties with India.

Energy poverty is a significant issue faced by over one billion people across the globe. It will undeniably be a hot topic at Rio +20, happening in June, which is why the public needs to tell politicians how they feel now!

To address this issue, Music for Relief has launched a new campaign called Power the World with an accompanying petition. The effort has already brought solar lights to Haiti, and is now working with We Care Solar to bring solar powered healthcare clinics to Uganda.

Linkin Park and many other artists are asking fans and supporters worldwide to sign the pledge, found at www.powertheworld.org. On June 19th, Music for Relief will deliver the petition to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The more signatures received, the greater the impact on world leaders, multinational corporations, civil society groups, and other attendees of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development.
