A military tribunal will formally charge Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his co-defendants for planning and executing the September 11, 2001, attacks that killed 2,976 people in New York, Washington and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The incrimination marks the second time the United States has attempted to prosecute the 9/11 suspects, which is considered trail of the century. This step comes over ten years after the most fatal attacks on American territory and just one about one year after Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, the man behind the entire saga, was killed in Abbottabad, the garrison city of Pakistan. Khalid Sheikh Muhammad along with Ramzi Binalshibh of Yemen, Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali of Pakistan, Walid bin Attash and Mustapha al-Hawsawi of Saudi Arabia will face the trail. All of them have been held for years at the US-run prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Legal and political battles occurred in the past few years how and where they should be prosecuted. Chief Prosecutor Brigadier General Mark Martins said it?s key to have transparency in the military commission. The Pentagon has opened four military bases on US territory to allow families of the 9/11 victims to watch the case unfold on a giant screen, showing a sign of the acute public interest in the proceedings. President Obama’s efforts to hold Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s trial in New York foundered in the face of political and public opposition and it will now be held at a military tribunal in Guantanamo Bay, as previously planned. The military tribunal system however has come under scrutiny, and some of the sharpest criticism has come from former chief prosecutor Morris Davis. In his view, it will be a mistake and history will judge it. He observed ?It is fair to anticipate that we will raise the delay as an issue in the case. The fact that KSM has not been pushed to trial earlier is a testament to the failure of the military commissions system?. The trial could still be years away, unless Mohammed pleads guilty to be put to death sooner and become a martyr for al Qaeda. He was captured in Pakistan in March 2003 and has been detained at Guantanamo Bay since 2006. Djamel Ameziane?s co-counsel at the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and the Center for Justice and International Law announced the move, as the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights does not publicly report on such decisions until they have been communicated to the parties. The Algerian national filed a request to the commission, an autonomous body of the Organization of American States, in August 2008, to review his jail conditions, alleged abuses he suffered there and the ?illegality? of his detention, according to his lawyers. ?The IACHR will specifically review the US government?s failure to transfer Djamel Ameziane or any man detained at Guantanamo for more than a year ? the longest period of time without a transfer since the prison opened in January 2002,? the lawyers said in a statement. Describing Ameziane as a ?refugee,? the lawyers said he left Algeria in the early 1990s as the country plunged into a brutal civil war that killed up to 200,000 people between 1991 and 2002. He worked as a chef in Austria and Canada before, fearing deportation, he fled to Afghanistan ahead of the US-led invasion there in October 2001. He then crossed the border into Pakistan to escape the war in Afghanistan and was sold to US forces for a bounty, his lawyers said. ?If he is returned to Algeria, he fears he will be persecuted based on his Berber ethnicity and his status as a Guantanamo detainee,? the lawyers said, noting that President Barack Obama?s administration has already forcibly repatriated two Algerian men from Guantanamo. ?He waits and hopes for another country to resettle him.? On the third and final day of his visit, the Pope requested United States to put an end to the 50-year-old trade embargo that they had placed on Cuba. The Pope also urged the communist island to bring a change within them but did not pose any question marks on the ideology. However, the Pope has clearly said that the country is in dire need of economic reforms. Moments before his departure, the Pope?s last message was aimed at the United States. ?Cuba could build a society of broad vision, renewed and reconciled,? he said, but it was more difficult ?when restrictive economic measures, imposed from outside the country, unfairly burden its people.? Following the 1953-1959 Cuban Revolution that was aimed at dictator Fulgencio Batista, Fidel Castro took control of the country. However, due to a lot of violent scenes that erupted due to the revolution, US chose to impose an economic embargo on Cuba in 1957. The embargo happened during the resolution during which US called back its ambassador in order to weaken the authoritarian regime of Batista. The embargo was later lifted but after the infamous Cuban Missile Crisis, US put another trade embargo in 1963. Fidel Castro was one of the key actors during that era and now, his brother Raul Castro is the president of a country that has struggled to increase its economic power for a long time. The Pope also had a meeting with Fidel Castro at the Vatican Embassy in Havana. During the half-hour rendezvous, Castro requested the Pontiff to recommend a book for him to read and to reflect upon.
