Ørestad is a new addition to Copenhagen, it’s futuristic, innovative and, I think, beautiful. But if you don’t live there, there’s not much going on in the area.
So unless you know where to find this sculpture, or you happen to be staying at the Bella Sky Hotel, you will almost certainly miss it, because it’s located in an unlikely place: not at all where you would accidentally pass by, but I think that just makes it more interesting.
Hop on the metro in direction Vestamager, get off at Bella Center Station, and walk back a little by Ørestads Boulevard. If you have looked out the window of the train to the right side, you will have spotted it already.
A concrete bridge leads you to the island itself, and in the middle there is a granite pillar ornamented with female bodies over which water constantly flows down. Around the column, there are four pavilions with roofs of colored glass. It’s perfectly beautiful in daylight but I recommend you go see it in the evening when the lights are on.
The entire thing is created by the same man who is behind Nørrebros Heart, the artist Bjørn Nørgaard.
The area behind Lovers Island is part of Amager Fælled, a nature reserve, and that somehow adds to the experience, realizing that you are standing in the city and in the middle of nature at the same time.

Should you happen to be on the Dronning Louises Bridge after dark walking towards Nørrebro, you might notice a large neon chicken on one of the rooftops on your right hand. This is the much loved Irma Hen, so loved that it’s even mentioned in a popular Danish song. It was put up in 1953 and as far as I know it is now protected.
Originally it was an advertisement for the ecological and fair-trade oriented Irma supermarket that still exists today, and in fact is one the world’s oldest grocery chains, but over time it has assumed the status of a landmark for Nørrebro.
It’s was switched off for an hour for the very first time in 2009 during Earth Hour and is now turned off once every year in the same context.
Dedicated fans have made a site that can keep you updated on the number of eggs Irmahønen has laid so far (It only works when the hen is switched on).
In addition to being a local darling, Irmahønen is also very productive laying seven eggs per minute. Not many chickens can brag about that.

This may not be the most obvious tourist destination and it does have a limited lifespan, but if you’re in the neighbourhood anyway, I think it’s worth a visit.
The Copenhagen metro system is expanding with a City ring which is supposed to be finished in 2018. One of the larger construction sites is located in Nørrebroparken. The large hole in the ground and the huge white indefinable machines, roaring and doing God knows what inside the enclosed area, is spectacle enough on its own.
The large gate to the construction site is mostly open during the day, so you can see what’s going on. But even when they are closed you can sneak-peak at the progress through several windows in the fence surrounding the site. And that’s another thing to look at: the fence.
It’s more than half a kilometre long and decorated with different kinds of art. Local artist and children from nearby schools and institutions have covered large parts of the fence with different kinds of artwork.
One of the pieces you can see is the remains of the large trees in the park that had to be cut down to make room for the construction site, now changed into art and put on display on the fence.
My own favourite is on the part of the fence facing Nordbanegade where miniature models of local shops and institutions are put up, like Rust and our local bus 5A.

Hans Tavsens Park ? A secret behind the cemetery

Assistens Cemetery is a popular spot for sunbathing and picnics, but if you’re not completely comfortable with the idea of baring skin among the tombstones, there is a fine alternative very close by. Behind the cemetery and between Holy Cross Church and The Metropolitan School is Hans Tavsens Park. The park was founded in the early twentieth century in a former part of the cemetery and is Copenhagen’s first public park.
In the park are some beautiful statues such as The Artemis Fountain by Johannes Bjerg.and Michelangelo’s Moses (well, a copy of it, anyway).
The park’s grill can be used free of charge and behind The Metropolitan School there are paved ball courts and climbing walls and a mini golf course. During opening hours you can borrow golf equipment in the playgroup buildings next to the golf course.
At the other end of the park near the church is a playground for smaller children.
Whereas Assistens Cemetery is a very tranquil place, Hans Tavsens Park is quite naturally a lot livelier, but you can easily find a peaceful spot away from the hordes of soccer-playing boys.
You can enter the park through the cemetery, or from Jagtvej via a somewhat humble reddish brown wooden gate, or from Hans Tavsens Gade.

Copenhagen has an almost brand new opera house. I have an excellent view of it from my office, and in my opinion it looks like a very large hat that someone has placed on the horizon of the city. And though the inside of the building is quite stunning, catching a performance there is definitely in the more expensive category of entertainment.
Luckily it is possible to find offers of fine art such as opera and poetry elsewhere, and – might I add – at a more affordable price. In an abolished church on Møllegade lies Literaturhaus. The place harbours a variety of events from readings by national and international writers, poetry duels, discussions, opera improvisation and stand-up opera – both of which can be rather overwhelming experiences – to electronic ambient and presentations of new releases of classical music.
Listening to, or rather experiencing opera at Literaturhaus is very different from going to an opera, and you don’t even have to be a huge fan of the genre to be impressed and enjoy yourself.
The original reason that I know of this place is less poetic: the owner rents out the church for social events, and my friends and I rented it some years back for a large party.
Prices too are in a completely different league than the big opera house.
Check out the program on Literaturhaus’ website. Unfortunately not all of it is translated into English, but some is.

I first saw them November last year. Back then there were only four of them: two bears, a monkey and a rabbit to be precise. One day they were just there, sitting in a tree.
Last time I counted, the number had grown to more than thirty, and almost every week new stuffed animals arrive to join the party. For the most part it’s good old teddy bears, but dolphins, crocodiles, elephants and a great deal of other plush creatures have come to join in. They have spread from their original tree, and now occupy the whole of two trees.
I pass their hangout every day twice, but I still haven’t been able to catch a glimpse of any of them arriving at the scene. It is quite a mystery what makes them gather in this particular area, where (to be honest) not much else is going on.
Maybe they are there to keep an eye on the skaters on the nearby ramp, or maybe they are looking after the friendly, harmless bunch of unemployed that hangs out drinking beer and having a smoke in a shack on the same spot of green.
Whatever the reason, they are not telling.

Entrepreneurship is a field filled with myths: One of them is that it is hard to start up something on your own. The experts have offered to share their tips
The financial crisis has apparently set off a wave of entrepreneurship (see article). In Denmark, the numbers of student-started companies has gone up, not down, since Europe?s paralysing recession ground the normal amount of jobs for graduates to a halt. Here is how you can be a part of the movement. Create a job of your own, and stop being dependent on a disappointing job market.

This place is an almost legendary hangout in Copenhagen. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and even though the majority of the guests are local it is also strangely international, probably due to the fact that many of the staff doesn’t necessarily speak Danish.
The interior is slightly curious. Lamp shades are doll heads and the place is full of stuffed animals that are not looking like you would expect them to. Actually most of them are dressed. And seem to have at bit of a rebel attitude. All the animal dolls are made ??by the artist Philip V. Jensen
The art exhibited on the walls is for sale and is made by changing artists and replaced a few times a year.
Bankeråt has a wide selection of beer, but personally I can recommend their Irish coffee. My friends and I have carefully and several times sampled the beverage, and there can be no doubt that it is the best in town.
Bankeråt also boasts a varied menu with everything from brunch to sandwiches to lamb stew, and the kitchen is open till 21:30 every day of the week.

Janteloven

Although many people will probably live in Denmark without knowing what this is, when one starts going a bit deeper into Danish culture, the Law of Jante (Janteloven in Danish) will most likely pop up at some point.
Although the law exists since the beginning of civilization, it was only officially declared in 1933 by writer Aksel Sandemose in the novel ?A refugee goes beyond limits”, in which the fictitious Danish town of Jante lives by its own ten commandments. Jante?s law is defined by Sandemose: ?This is Jante: each little soul?s struggle for coequality and recognition, never without consciousness that all the others are greater than he.?
It’s one of the many non-written laws in Denmark, which operates in a subconscious level. Those foreigners who want to integrate properly should know it (and probably follow it to a certain degree?)
According to Wikipedia, there are ten different rules in the law as defined by Sandemose, all expressive of variations on a single theme and are usually referred to as a homogeneous unit: Don’t think you’re anyone special or that you’re better than us.
The ten rules state:

Don’t think you’re anything special.
Don’t think you’re as good as us.
Don’t think you’re smarter than us.
Don’t convince yourself that you’re better than us.
Don’t think you know more than us.
Don’t think you are more important than us.
Don’t think you are good at anything.
Don’t laugh at us.
Don’t think anyone cares about you.
Don’t think you can teach us anything.

In conclusion, it’s all about being humble and not bragging of ones success/skills. As I see it, it tries to take importance off the individual and give it to the society as a whole. Maybe that results in the egalitarian/homogeneous society that we know?
According to my skat, it is not something that they’re told but more the general mentality of Danish people, that dislikes anyone that stands out.
Well, I am sorry but I don’t like it. Of course I don’t like the opposite mentality either, that is mothers who tell their children they are the best in the world, better than anyone else. That happens a lot in Spain (I guess it happens in a lot of countries) and it results in a bunch of spoiled-narcicistic-selfcentered jer… erm.. people.
My kids (future kids, as in the ones I’ll maybe have in some years from now) are gonna be told what my mum told me: “You are different, because we are all different. You’ll be good at some things, and bad at others. You’ll be better than some people at some things, and you’ll be much worse at others. And that’s okay, and that doesn’t make you better or worse than anyone, just different”.
Diversity is necessary. Diversity leads to evolution. Diversity brings enrichment. Of course it’s not nice when someone comes to us thinking that he’s better (as a whole) than anyone else (personally I’d punch these people on the face), but how good is it having people who think they’re worth nothing?
Balance, friends, balance is always the key.

Some days ago an episode in class made me think yet again about how wonderful it is when cultures meet across new languages. In my little Danish class I have a mix of Greenlanders, Afghanis and Hungarians and we were reading an article about seal hunters in Greenland and how their view on nature might [...]

Photographer Pierre Chauffour created this video of extreme highline in the Verdon, “Cirque de Sordidon”.
This is what he says: “First video making experience, first highline i tried… At first, i’m a photographer, but this time i decided to film what i saw (i’m not on the video). Try standing up on a highline is not the easyest thing I did. Making my own video of this amazing trip neither.”

Art can often be many things, for different people; Confusing, inspiring, educational, and this Sunday 20 May, the Host Guest Ghost project hopes it will be a meditative experience, a ?different? way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
The upcoming event is a continuation of the series which the University Post covered earlier this year, (Read the article: Hot soup, art = nice, cosy, winter day) and thus far, the project has spanned five different artistic expressions and host, guest, ghost combinations.

People-to-people contact is manifestation of deepen bilateral relations: Says PM while addressing Chinese Youth contingent
Islamabad: (Monday, May 14, 2012) Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, while addressing the Youth contingent from China here today, said that the people-to-people contact is manifestation of our shared resolve to further deepen our
bilateral relations and we vow to take them to new heights.
Welcoming the delegation, the PM said, ?It is a matter of immense pleasure for me to welcome the 100- member Chinese Youth Delegation on their visit to Pakistan. This fifth visit of the Chinese
Youth Delegation is part of bilateral Youth Exchange Programme, which was agreed to during the visit of the Chinese President His Excellency Hue Jin Tao to Pakistan in 2006.?
PM Gilani was of the view that this people exchange programme has helped both China and Pakistan to boost their cultural and economic relations. He said, ?As a result of Youth Exchange Programme, we now have 1000 enterprising men
and women from both countries, who have deeper understanding of each other?s culture, history, and a way of life. This strengthening of people-to-people contact is a manifestation of our shared resolve to further deepen our bilateral relations and take them
to new heights.?
Dwelling on the fruits of this people exchange programme, the PM said, ?I am sure that your visit will contribute to building a bright future for the relations of our two countries. It goes without saying thatPakistan and China are
good neighbours, time-tested friends, kind brothers, close partners and strategic allies. This is a unique relationship, which goes beyond governments and is owned by people of both countries.?
