Force India is looking to update its car ahead of the European season of Formula 1. So far it has not performed to its billed potential but has started picking up pace. In the recently concluded Bahrain GP Paul di Resta drove impressively as he finished sixth in the race. Di Resta was the only driver to successfully complete the race with a two stop strategy. The strategy worked well for him as he started the race from 10thplace and finished ahead of both the Ferrari?s and Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren. Force India did very well previous year and finished sixth in the Constructors? Championship after battling it out with Renault now known as Lotus. Lotus though this season have shown much improvement with their new car E20 and is contention for the top position. Force India has struggled in the first part of the season and with the new updates ahead of the Mugello test. Fernley believes that Force India could be very well placed now. ?Our plan heading into the first four races was to use good race craft and good strategy with a car that perhaps wasn’t where we wanted it to be,? Fernley is quoted by Sky Sports. ?And I think we delivered on that quite well, with only the one bad result in Shanghai. We’re probably better off than we thought in some ways, but we still have to deliver the next bit.? He added, ?Of course, we’ve some wonderful teams around us who are not sitting still either, so it depends on what they deliver and whether we can close the gap. As to whether we’ve given ourselves a platform now, and with the package to come, hopefully the answer is yes.? It will be interesting to see how Force India progress ahead in the season as the European leg of the season starts three weeks from now with the Spanish Grand Prix opening the European tour. The season has so far been up and down for Ferrari even though Alonso was able to eke out a Grand Prix win when no one gave him a chance. The win showed why Alonso is one of the greatest exponents of the sport, his sheer determination and the alertness to availing the opportunities given is extraordinary. He did it at Silverstone in the 2011 season and he has done the same at the Spanish Grand Prix. Both the races had the weather element common, because of the nature of the Ferrari car, the engine performs better in cooler weather conditions and that was enough invitation for Alonso to work his magic. The world was surprised to more than less likely 2012 Ferrari car win a Grand Prix in grand style. Although performances since that victory have been below par relative to Ferrari and Alonso standards yet no one is going to underestimate them. As Ferrari look to improve their car for their car with the required updates, the camp will be happy to move to the European leg of the season as the weather conditions are bound to help their car. Alonso will feel confident going into the Spanish GP even though he finished seventh in the recently concluded Bahrain Grand Prix. He said that the team knew that the Bahrain GP race was going to be a tough ordeal, and although he predicted that he will be finishing around 7th or 9th place it is still disappointing to know that he was not able to challenge the leaders of the grid. While the season is still very much open and it is anyone?s game at this point. He was still among points at the race and a positive sign is that Felipe Massa was able to open his account for the season as well. He and the team?s hopes that this is be the start of better performances from a nervous and out of luck Massa who has been struggling in the season so far. Massa finished 9th in the race. Alonso did well during the race to keep Lewis Hamilton behind him, as the McLaren was clearly the better car but it was Alonso?s skill and the Ferrari?s straight line speed that allowed the Spaniard to keep his position. Alonso though admitted that that car is behind in terms of performance from the likes of McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes and even Lotus. He said that it is not a big worry as the team is working hard to change that. The updates will definitely change a few things for the better in the car and as the gap between teams is already very tight, even minor tweaks can result in major improvements. Alonso have so far drove well, and exceeded the expectations driving a complex Ferrari car, while his teammate Felipe Massa continues to disappoint. Ferrari will need both their drivers firing in Europe if they are to remain in contention for the constructors? and drivers? titles. The team has been suffering from serious technical issues ever since the F2012 came out for the first pre-season test. Fernando Alonso?s skilful driving was not enough during the Bahrain GP for Ferrari to finish in the top five. Both their drivers Alonso and Felipe Massa while finished among points were placed down in the standing at 7th and 9th respectively. Team principal Stefano Domenicali has said that though this was not the best of results but such is the situation that the team is relieved to get this result. Now the plan is to make sure both the drivers finish the race and are among points. The team understands that the car needs major updates before the European leg of the season starts. The Mugello test while is not going to be featuring all the updates that Ferrari are looking to install but will have the most of them. The test will be a good measure of all the tweaks Ferrari is going to update the F2012 with. The car?s balance, traction and tyre degradation is another issue that the team is looking to fix. Massa has been hurt the most with the new car as he has been struggling so far in the season. Team president Luca di Montezemolo has been very vocal about the team?s poor showing in 2011 and called for a much improved show during the 2012 season. Ferrari though have had a lot of trouble and his hopes of a strong comeback have been shaken but not shattered yet as the season is still very much open and Ferrari can still remain in contention for the world title and the drivers? title. Domenicali talked about things that are required by Ferrari to look into, ?We know we must raise the performance level of our car: from what we have seen here in Australia, there are several teams not so far off one another and one does not need to make enormous progress to make up several places. We know the main areas we need to work on – traction and top speed first and foremost – and we must accelerate as much as possible the development work to reach the level of the best as soon as possible.? Alonso talked about the team?s performance and said that he knew Bahrain GP was going to be a difficult race but it is good that he has managed to bring home some useful points. He added that the Spanish Grand Prix will be a new period for the team and hopefully an improved show will be on display. It will be interesting to see how Ferrari will perform during the European season as the F2012 performs better under cooler weather conditions and the weather will be much cooler than it has been in Malaysia, China and Bahrain. Di Resta went for a two-stop strategy and it worked for him perfectly as he started the race placed tenth and finished at sixth. It was a good performance considering Force India has been struggling so far in the season to make an impact. The good showing at Bahrain was a mix of good qualifying and skilfully managed race day driving. Di Resta qualified in the top ten during the qualifiers and then worked hard to achieve a sixth place finish during the race. He said that the team did not have the start they wanted by the team has gone through more difficulties in the season so far and so he was not too worried about it and went about his work. He said that when he passed Bruno Senna in the Williams, he knew that he had a good chance of overtaking a few other cars as well. Two laps later, he overtook Sergio Perez in the Sauber. To that point di Resta said that he saved his tyres and saw no signs of his tyres degrading, while others were getting to that point of changing their tyres. ?We had to stop a bit earlier and that’s probably why we lost out to Nico in the end, not being able to just get in clean air when we wanted to but everything’s a gamble at the end of the day. We’ve chosen the right strategy to push us forward; we were running fifth at one point and getting sixth is a lot of points for us given where the car is at the moment,? di Resta said. He added that the result has motivated him to improve on the results in the future and look to move up the ranks in the coming races. ?The result today is massive for us. The team did an amazing job all weekend, the strategy came together and the pit-stops were perfect,? he added. It would be interesting to see how Force India progress in the season. The next race is not for another three weeks and it will give di Resta some time to prepare for more strategies for the European season ahead. Ferrari have been hampered by a technically faulty car, leading the team?s technical director Pat Fry to go on to say that the car might find it difficult to get podium finishes. Although Ferrari has been successful enough to score a Grand Prix in at the Malaysian Grand Prix but it the win was heavily dependent on weather conditions and some very skill full driving from Fernando Alonso. The win does not hide the problems Ferrari faces with the car and during the Chinese Grand Prix it was once again evident that Ferrari was unable to match up to the leaders of the grid. Alonso finished 9th in and his team-mate Felipe Massa finished with 14th place finish. It was the third pointless race in a row for Massa who has been struggling since the 2011 season and the complex car has put even more burden on the Brazilian. ?The result does not represent the car’s true potential in race configuration but we have to accept it,? he said after the race. ?We lack performance, we know it, but there is no point in beating ourselves up over it: rather we need to concentrate all our efforts on improving car performance.? ?Next week in Bahrain we won’t have any particularly significant updates, so we cannot expect a miracle: we must try and squeeze the maximum out of what we have to work with,? he added. Ferrari tweaked the car with five updates for the Chinese Grand Prix hoping to close in the gap with the leaders, but it is clear that the car still lacks the pace to match up and team boss Stefano Domenicali admitted that the team will need to work twice as much to get the results they need. Domenicali said that Ferrari will look to race defensively but will remain in contention for the world title and the championship is still wide open. The next destination is Bahrain Grand Prix scheduled for April 22, 2012. It will interesting to see who gets the highest accolades at Sakhir as there has been a different winner for each Grand Prix so far. Going into the Malaysian Grand Prix Ferrari will be looking to better that performance, but the question is how and what will be required to achieve that? Ferrari team Principal Stefano Domenicali has said that the team understands that in order to be competitive it needs to work on the top speed and traction of the car. He said that is the area of major concern right now. Felipe Massa has said that the balance of the car is not right and that is something that has troubled him throughout the qualifiers and the race on Sunday as well. The balance affects the compounds and results in higher degradation of the tyres. On the other hand Fernando Alonso has performed admirably with the given machinery and finished 5th. Stefano said that the team is not happy with the fifth place but considering the situation Ferrari is in at the moment the result is a positive one. He praised Alonso and said that the Spaniard?s performance was really good.  He added that Alonso?s pace was not bad initially as compared to the leaders of the grid but later on he struggled and the safety car did not help him either. He did struggle to keep Pastor Maldonado?s Williams behind him and he was fortunate to keep his position as the Williams car was not able to finish the race. According to the principal Massa?s woes have not yet been addressed as the team still needs to look into the balance of the car and make sure they can eliminate such a high rate of tyre degradation. Domenicali said that it is unfortunate that the Brazilian was not able to finish the race because he had a pretty good start and managed to move up into the top ten very quickly. It is clear that the car that showed up in Melbourne is not the car that the team wants to go with throughout the season, and work is being done to change that. The engineers are aware of the situation and are working hard to find a work around through his difficult time. Domenicali also added that the fans and critics should not make haste in discounting Ferrari just yet, it is a long season ahead and things can change quickly. Especially because the difference between teams is not that great this season so no major overhaul is required just a little bit in pace and traction will do the trick for the team. Malaysia is another opportunity where Ferrari can look to get a better performance out of the car and make sure both the drivers are able to finish the race.
