Det er herfra sangen “Shake It Out” er taget, og siden jeg hørte den første gang, har den simpelthen hængt ved. Vokalen sidder som altid lige i skabet, og omkvædet er svært ikke at nynne med på. Det er Arni Bergmann (De Eneste To), der har drejet knapper på produktionen, og det er lykkedes ham at få en fyldig, varm men alligevel skarp lyd på EP’en. Alle instrumenter og vokaler ligger som de skal i lydbilledet, hvilket gør EP’en til en behagelig lytteoplevelse.   Selskabet og bandet insisterer på at kaldet denne udgivelse et album, men af nørdmæssige årsager og spilletid, må jeg insistere på at kalde dette en 12” EP. Med en spilletid på lidt over 20 minutter og 6 numre, vil det vist være en tilsnigelse at kalde det et helt album. Nuvel, det skal ikke skille os ad, for i sidste ende er det musikken, det handler om, og ikke diverse genre-definitioner.   Killing Something That’s Already Dead udkommer kun på vinyl og i digital format fra bandets hjemmeside. Machine, Dear har kræset om udgivelsen, både produktionsmæssigt og sandelig også i indspakning. Vinylen er en lækker 12” på hvid vinyl og coveret er en lækker indpakning med ensartet tryk på coveret og den plastlomme, der er uden om coveret. Det giver en effekt af optisk bedrag og nærmest 3D oplevelse, hvis man hiver cover ud af plast. En lille, men god detalje, der er med til at hæve den behagelige oplevelse af denne EP.   Og ”behageligt” er vel også nøgleordet for sangene, som Machine, Dear har skrevet. De bevæger sig i et adstadigt tempo, og kunne absolut fungere som behagligt lydbillede til mange lounge-arrangementer.   Machine, Dear bruger ikke de typiske pop-skabeloner, og jeg vil vove pelsen og hævde, at de finder deres inspiration i andre genrer end poppen, da de er mere progressive end poppede. Steven Wilson og Mikael Åkerfeldt kan have roteret heftigt på deres pladespiller. Men også 80ikoner (ingen nævnt, ingen glemt) har været en del af den musikalske ballast, specielt brugen af keys giver associationer hertil. De luftige vokaler giver en fornemmelse af overskud, og de giver de gode melodiliner mere liv. Med brug af skæve tilgange til opbygning og et ret sikkert øre for at skabe stemninger, leverer Machine, Dear gode, progressive popsange med elektroniske undertoner.   Specielt nummeret ”Get Out” rammer en absolut nerve hos mig. Den insisterende basgang og rytme samt den – i forhold til resten af EP’en – atypiske vokal, giver EP’en kontrast, og det får den til at vokse. Men også åbneren ”Averages” med de slet skjulte bossanova-inspirationer i moderne, atmosfærisk indpakning giver EP’en kant.   Killing Something That’s Already Dead har forskellig påvirkning af lytteren alt efter hvilken steming og situation man er i. Just last Wednesday I went to the toy store BR to buy Christmas presents for my nieces. Every time I’m in there I get surprised because of how cheap toys are! You can get very cool toys for such low prices. And this makes me buying more… Watch this Swedish documentary. It’s in English. And it really makes you think… Whenever I think about where the toys come from, I think of machines and robots. But these Chinese ladies are human – even though they are treated as robots. And the toys buyers and chains in Europe (and the rest of the world) excuse themselves with: “Yeah, but the thing is, the consumers doesn’t want to pay more”. I think this is a huge lie. I know for a fact, that I would buy toys that were more expensive. I’d probably just buy less. But my nieces don’t need 5 pieces of toys either! They would be just as happy with just 2 great pieces of toys.
