            <title>Doc Lounge: Eco Pirate ? the story of Paul Watson</title>
            <link>http://www.eventuelt.org/?p=20770&amp;utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=doc-lounge-eco-pirate-the-story-of-paul-watson</link>
            <description>

- Filmvisning
- Skype-Q&amp;amp;A med instruktøren, Trish Dolman
- &amp;#8220;Pirater på månen&amp;#8221; spiller chill

Husk kontanter til entré (50 kr.) og baren

Vel mødt til en fremragende doku-aften.

Hvor: Die Asta, Filmbyen 19, 2. sal
Hvornår: Torsdag d. 29. marts kl. 19.00-ca. 23.30
Pris: 50 kr.

            <description>

Less than two weeks ago we launched the beginning of a vital new campaign ? to protect the Great Barrier Reef and our climate from the reckless expansion of the coal export industry.

This will be the biggest environmental campaign Australia has ever seen and it has got off to a cracking start. From front page stories and commentary from the nation?s power-holders, to a huge public outcry ? the response has been staggering. And it has been the result of a few key elements:

A revealing report
When we released our report ?Boom Goes The Reef? on 1 March, it was the first time the cumulative impact of all proposed developments on the reef had been collated. It exposes the damning evidence of what is in store for our reef.

UNESCO?s visit
The guardians of World Heritage ? UNESCO ? arrived in Australia last Monday to investigate development projects in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. UNESCO was initially concerned with the approval of new gas processing plants on Curtis Island off Gladstone. When we briefed the UNESCO delegation, we made sure they understood that the problem runs far greater than this. With coal export infrastructure planned to be built along nearly the entire length of the World Heritage Area, we got the message out to UNESCO and the world that the reef is in danger.

            <title>New report examines Canada?s ?Dirty Oil Diplomacy?</title>
            <link>http://tcktcktck.org/2012/03/new-report-examines-canadas-dirty-oil-diplomacy/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=new-report-examines-canadas-dirty-oil-diplomacy</link>
            <description>

Hundreds gathered outside more than 20 Canadian diplomatic missions in the U.S. and European Union to voice concern and extend hope that Canada will reverse its international lobbying on behalf of highly destructive and polluting tar sands oil industry. The vigils were held in conjunction with a new report documenting the Canadian government?s aggressive lobbying to promote tar sand and stop international climate action.

?Yesterday, hundreds gathered at Canadian foreign missions to offer a prayer for peoples of all nations to remember that the land belongs to the future and is not ours to destroy,? said The Reverend Canon Sally G. Bingham, Interfaith Power &amp;amp; Light?s President. ?We are concerned for our Earth, for she has a fever that will only be made worse by burning tar sands from Canada. We pray that people all over the world awaken to monumental climate-threats posed by the extraction and burning of tar sands oil.?
Follow links for a list of vigils and images of the events.
The new report, Dirty Oil Diplomacy ? The Canadian Government?s Global Push to Sell the Tar Sands, outlines the changing domestic and international policies of the Canadian government as they work to expand the tar sands ? Canada?s fastest growing source of greenhouse gas pollution. This report is based on hundreds of pages of documents obtained through Canadian freedom of information laws*. It paints a clear picture for the first time of the tar sands advocacy strategy, a collaborative effort of the Governments? of Canada and Alberta along with industry to ensure that no doors are closed to Canada?s highly polluting tar sands.

?The Canadian Government is working hand in hand with the tar sands industry in a campaign to ensure nothing stands in the way of the reckless expansion of this highly polluting oil,? said Hannah McKinnon, Campaign Director with Climate Action Network Canada. ?In the era of dangerous climate change, this campaign is an offensive attack on countries, First Nations, and citizens that recognize the urgent need to move away from dirty energy towards the safe and clean energy future the world needs.?

The full report can be found here or on www.drawthelineattarsands.com  The report was released by Climate Action Network Canada, Environmental Defence Canada, Equiterre, Greenpeace, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the U.S. Sierra Club.

We?ve come to know Kelly Rigg in her role as the Executive Director of the Global Campaign for Climate Action (TckTckTck), a global alliance of more than 300 organizations ? including Global Green. She has led international campaigns for the last 30 years and is also the co-founder of the Varda Group, a consultancy that provides campaign and strategic advice to nonprofits. Below, she answers questions for our Global Green Room Interview.

What would surprise us about your work?

People often assume I?m a climate expert, but in fact I am the supreme generalist. I?ve worked on so many issues over the years ? apart from climate and energy, my heart really belongs to the sea. Don?t get me wrong ? I do my homework, but if anything I?m an expert on campaigning. And especially on working with coalitions of organizations to protect our global commons.

We are only a few months from some major climate milestones this year and the movement is coming together with energy, creativity and bold action. From joining Warrior Princesses in scaling drill ships en route to the Arctic, to fighting the forest code in Brazil with a worldwide online action, our partners continue to work tirelessly for a better world. Power Shift-ers keep 30% by 2020 on the EU agenda
As European Union Environment Ministers get ready for an important meeting this Friday about future emission reduction targets, members of the TckTckTck alliance came together with music, signs and positive energy in Gammel Torv, Copenhagen to encourage Danish politicians representing the current EU presidency to show stronger climate leadership.

Youth associates from 10:10 Denmark, the UK Youth Climate Coalition and Denmark?s Youth in Action Programme staged a flashmob to demonstrate how there is large youth-led support for a low-carbon future; the opportunities for green job creation to address rising youth unemployment; and the clean healthy society it would create for all EU countries, as opposed to indulging corporate interest and support for business as usual.

?The EU needs to be cutting carbon now. This is a topic Denmark has so far evaded while setting the Council agenda, for fear of setting themselves up for a fall - echoing back to their experiences at the United Nations climate talks in Copenhagen in 2009.? said Emma Biermann, Co-Founder of the UK Youth Climate Coalition, who were involved in organising the action. Watch the video:

Success and setbacks in moving Beyond Coal
While big oil has attracted a lot of activist energy in the past several months, it is not the only fossil fuel we need to move beyond. Our partners in the USA secured a powerful victory last week with the announcement of the closure and retirement of more than 100 coal power plants across the country. Two notable inclusions are the Fisk and Crawford coal plants, the oldest and dirtiest coal-fired power plants in the nation located in the heart of Chicago?s southwest side. From the Sierra Club Beyond Coal press release:

?The Fisk coal plant in Pilsen will retire in 2012 and the Crawford coal plant in Little Village will retire by 2014. As part of the Chicago Clean Power Coalition, Sierra Club has worked with an incredible group of local community organizations to retire these coal plants due to the dangerous health impacts on the families of Chicago. Today?s announcement of the retirement of the Fisk and Crawford coal plants is a triumph for Chicago families,&quot; said Sierra Club?s Executive Director Michael Brune.&quot;These old and dirty plants have been polluting two thriving Chicago neighborhoods for over 100 years. Pollution from these coal plants has been making local residents sick since 1903, contributing to asthma attacks, respiratory illnesses and other health problems. This is giant leap in our work to move America beyond coal.&quot;

Watch their video commemorating the success:

At the same time, our partners at Greenpeace Australia-Pacific are battling a formidable challenge from the coal industry to one of the world?s most precious ocean ecosystems: the Great Barrier Reef.

In a report released this week, Greenpeace reveals the terrible threats an Australian coal boom poses to the Great Barrier Reef. Along with doubling coal exports within a decade, the creation of the proposed mega mines in Central Queensland, their accompanying export infrastructure and increases in shipping traffic, as well as the burning of the coal they produce, place an incredible burden on Australia?s ocean environments. Download the report and sign the petition to protect the Great Barrier Reef from coal industry expansion.
Fighting to preserve the Forest Code in Brazil
Huge demonstrations are happening in Brazil?s capital Brasilia this week, to try to block the final Forest Code vote in parliament.

Our partners at WWF International are bringing people together around the world in an online demonstration this week using the hashtag #SOSBrazil. Watch their short video about the campaign below:

As WWF says in their blog about the vote and its importance:

?Blocking the vote this week would likely postpone proceedings until 2013, as President Dilma Rousseff attempts to save her environmental reputation in time for June?s UN Conference on Sustainable Development (the Rio+20 Earth Summit), which she is hosting in Rio de Janeiro. This would allow time for proper scientific evaluation of the potential impacts of the proposals, and a deeper discussion among people and politicians. There?s so much scientific evidence and public opinion stacking up against the changes - and the proposals are so full of technical and legislative errors - that it?s clear the reforms should not to be voted on at this stage. If passed, there?s a serious danger that vast areas in Brazil?s forests, wetlands, mangroves and other important habitats would be left completely unprotected and subject to being legally cleared.?

UPDATE: The pressure is working! The Brazilian government has decided to postpone the vote until Tuesday, March 13. Learn more about how you can help keep attention on this cause and make sure Brazil lives up to its reputation as an environmental leader.</description>

            <description>

Many of the countries that have contributed the least to greenhouse gas emissions will be the worst affected by global warming, a ?climate injustice? that highlights the link to human rights, experts told a gathering in Geneva.

?As we take steps to address climate change, we must not do so at the cost of the most vulnerable and discriminated [against] members of the world?s communities,? UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said during a 23-24 February seminar.

Pillay and others pointed out that global warming would have a harsh impact on many of the least developed countries and particularly marginalized communities, which suffer from poor resilience and inadequate ability to respond to climate change.

?The worst affected areas include Central, East and West Africa, the Pacific and South Asia. Almost every sub-Saharan African country is vulnerable to a greater degree, as are small islands and low-lying coastal countries,? said Dipi Moni, Foreign Minister of Bangladesh.

?Historically responsible countries must not turn a blind eye to the denial of human rights of millions affected in vulnerable countries,? Moni said.

New Zealand actor Lucy Lawless, star of hit US TV show Spartacus and Xena: Warrior Princess, joined Greenpeace activists in stopping a Shell-contracted oil drillship from departing New Zealand for the Arctic, where its exploratory oil drilling programme threatens to devastate the Alaskan coastline.

Lucy Lawless boarded the Noble Discoverer as a member of the Greenpeace team, scaled the drillship?s derrick and occupied it along with six other climbers.?I?m blocking Shell?s Arctic drillship because I believe passionately that renewable energy is the way of the future,? said Lucy Lawless. ?We don?t have to go to the ends of the earth to suck out every last drop of oil. Instead we need to smarten up and begin the transition to a clean, green, sustainable energy future and right now that means keeping Shell out of the Arctic.?

The Noble Discoverer, scheduled to drill three exploratory oil wells this summer in the Chukchi Sea off the coast of Alaska, was blocked from leaving the port of Taranaki for its 6,000 nautical mile journey by Greenpeace New Zealand activists who boarded the vessel and occupied the drilling derrick, equipped with enough supplies to last for several days.
