Name: Green Spaces Big Idea: Green Spaces provides coworking office space in New York City and Denver to social entrepreneurs and non-profits. Why It’s Working: Green Spaces does more than provide social companies a place to work. Networking opportunities, an intern program and a referral network are available to companies that call Green Spaces home. For Green Spaces co-founder Marissa Feinberg, the inspiration for the New York and Colorado-based green coworking network appeared simply by looking around at her network

Behind the Launch: How to Court Startup Investors

Discuss the show on Twitter: #BehindTheLaunch In Mashable‘s new video series, Behind the Launch, we’re taking cameras behind the scenes at Vungle, an in-app video advertising startup. Last week, we met the the founders and saw them bring on Colin Behr to head up business development. Now that they have a promising platform and a “closer,” it’s time to chat with investors. Silicon Valley names, such as 500 Startups‘ Dave McClure, DFJ Esprit‘s Krishna Visvanathan and AOL Ventures‘ Adam Smith, appear in this episode, as Jack and Zain court investors and learn from the best. “They don’t want ‘Yes men,’” says Smith.

Facebook Faces FTC Probe Over Instagram, Unlikely to Delay IPO

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has reportedly launched a competition probe into Facebook’s $1 billion acquisition of Instagram. The investigation could take up to 12 months, but it will not necessarily delay Facebook’s IPO, which is expected next week. “Typically speaking, unless the FTC has actual regulatory concerns — in other words they think the prospectus doesn’t have all the information the investing public might need — then Facebook can go ahead and IPO,” James Brau, a professor of finance at Brigham Young University, tells Mashable. Brau says he would expect, given a major concern, that the FTC would not prevent Facebook’s impending IPO. David Balto, a former policy director at the FTC who now works as an anti-trust lawyer, agrees that the FTC standing in the way of Facebook going public on schedule would be unlikely. The probe itself is routine, as the FTC requires detailed filings for all acquisitions larger than $68.2 million.

Klout has had a busy few weeks, unleashing an iPhone app, brand pages and a new API. But more changes are on deck. Klout CEO Joe Fernandez hinted at those developments on stage and backstage at Mashable Connect in Orlando. The San Francisco-based startup will announce this month four more partners for its version of brand pages — Brand Squads. The feature launched in April with Red Bull.

Why Marketing Is Broken and How to Fix It

The marketing world needs to stop being so afraid and start solving problems, according to Cindy Gallop, an entrepreneur and consultant whose prescription for growth calls for emphasizing creativity over data collection. Gallop, who spoke at Mashable Connect Saturday morning, critiqued the current state of marketing, which she believes is driven by fear. “Fear is the single worst dynamic in business,” she said. “Decisions made out of fear are always very bad decisions.” Such trepidation, predicated by the economy, has caused marketers to become much more cautious, hence the emphasis on data collection in lieu of risk-taking. In Gallop’s view, though, this array of data has caused paralysis. Lacking any single standard for tracking data, marketers are merely analyzing.

Valve?s Hilarious Employee Handbook Reveals Amusing Secrets [VIDEO]

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work for game developer Valve? You might have thought the company was highly unconventional, but a peek inside its employee handbook gives you a better indication of just how deep that insouciant peculiarity goes within the organization. Valve Software is a privately held Kirkland, Washington company, founded in 1996 by Microsoft employees Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington, is best known for its hit games including Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Portal, Left for Dead and Alien Swarm. Valve’s Handbook for New Employees surfaced on the Flamehaus Forum this week, and you’ll probably find its contents highly amusing. Is it true that Valve’s managers don’t actually exist? Mashable‘s Christian Bryant fills you in on the sordid details.
