The new Prius C is the successor and younger sibling to last year?s Prius V, which was the midrange hatch in the hybrid category of the Japanese automakers. Loaded with new car tech and a very fuel efficient power system, although incorporating the same power train that was found in the previous models, the car comes with a reasonable price tag as well. The new Prius C is about 13 feet in length shaving off some inches to make a small size hatchback. After the release of the Prius V, Toyota came to realize that there is a need for a hatchback that could be used to target those who want a car with a smaller footprint. However, that does not mean that the Prius V is not a worthwhile purchase. Last year?s model sell like hot cakes in its own right. The new model is a perfect match for fuel efficiency and environment friendliness. Under the hood is a gas-powered engine complimented by a 45-kilowatt electric motor to inject a few of its power. Both engines unleash 99 horses combined to the front wheels that can be used simultaneously or separately, depending on the need, as in highway or the city. Speaking of which, the new instalment to the Prius line provides Environment Protection Agency?s approved 54 miles per gallon average in the city and 46 miles per gallon on the highway. Given the size of the car, it was expected the vehicle would offer more efficiency that the Prius V, which according to the EPA renders 51 mpg city and 48 mpg highway. In a week of travelling through both city and on the highway, gave an average of a little over 50 mpg. The highway average was constantly over 50 as compared to 46 provided by the EPA. This difference in numbers might be due to the reason that the EPA considers 65 miles per hour speed is the standard to cruise on the highway. However, during rush hours, maintaining that kind of speed is practically impossible, for a person like me at least. While the average mileage of the car is satisfying, the power system is a little disappointing. Prius C comes pre-installed with two driving modes, EV and Eco. In the EV mode, the car is supposed to milk the power of the electric motor, suitable for a ride in the city, but as soon as you bury your foot on the accelerator to speed up the car, the gas-engine kicks in to support the electric motor. The Eco mode provides a low acceleration from the power train with only the electric motor running to make the vehicle even more fuel efficient. The comfort in the car is more or less the same as was in the Prius V. Toyota has installed the same soft padded seats that provide the same comfortable cushion to the driver and passengers. Pull down the throttle and the car accelerates pretty convincingly and changing lanes has improved in this new installation. The steering is quite responsive to the driver?s intentions but it lacks the sharpness to some extent. But that can be warded off as Prius C is Prius V, much less a sports car. Moreover, the driver gets to feel the boost of the electric motor kicking in as the car turns. The full turn radius is quite impressively sharp, even for a hatchback. The scores range from 1 through 100. The Eco Score hands out the points on good start, cruise and stop. After a while it turns out that a good start in C is easy but the stopping and cruising are hardest parts. The system does not seem to have incorporated the algorithms for rush hours and/or hills, as in hilly areas. The stopping requires a full mechanism to understand in order to earn good grades from Eco Score, which might be easy to learn for an astronaut but not for a person like me. The Prius C comes equipped with Entune, Toyota?s operating system installed in the stereo. However, the latest version in the 2012 hatchback is an upgraded improvement to the likes of Camry, Prius V and the original Prius. The menus load quickly and Entune provides the information like gas prices at the nearby gas stations and traffic data in a snap, whereas, the previous version used to take forever to load and download data packets from the web. Even Bing search returns results quickly. The stereo is also compatible with smartphones like iPhone. Toyota provides an adaptor for iPhone connect to Entune. Once connected, the 6.1-inch screen shows the menus allowed by Apple. The user can navigate through the playlists; make calls and many more things. All smartphones connect to the Entune seamlessly via Bluetooth. Again, the user can makes calls. Toyota has provided voice recognition software, with which the driver can speak the message. However, Apple does not allow the messages to be displayed on the car stereo?s screen. In a nutshell, the car is an upgrade in many ways to its predecessors. The stereo software is an improvement for a start. The power train is a good amalgamation of fuel and power efficiency. The price may be high for a hatchback but throw in the hybrid variable and the whole picture changes.
