By pursuing this trend blindly, they remain struggling in getting at the top in their profession because they are not interested in it. They are forced to complete their study in that particular field because of its scope in the market. Disapproving aspect is that students get education just for the sake of good job, not for getting knowledge of a particular subject of their interest. Parents also play a key role in this regard as they force their children to study such subjects that have a good scope in the market. Just finding a job should not be the only objective of students because it confines students to a certain level and they fail to move ahead. If students select the subject of their own choice, they will more likely to earn a respectable name in that particular field. They should follow the subjects of their own interests and if they don?t they will always remain struggling in such a field which is against our interest. Those students, who complete their education in the subjects of their interest, establish a respectable position wherever they work. They put full effort in that specific field and the results always remain favourable. Nonetheless, the important thing for the parents is that they should understand the inclination of their children and should encourage them to adopt a field of their own choice which will help their children to get their targets in a much better way. So when you look across subjects one central element that runs through is the importance of engagement. Or more specifically – purposeful engagement. Whether in forming professional relationships in person or through a digital medium, connecting with customers through social media, or reaching out to past customers, one of the ever-present goals is purposeful engagement. What is meant by this is that when marketers connect with audience members, they want it to be meaningful and impactful, inspiring them and moving them to action. Marketers need this communication to hold value for the audience members and not just be token promotion or commenting. We all know what each feels like in everyday conversations with friends, colleagues, and even traditional promotions that we are exposed to. But transitioning this to the digital landscape is a challenge. How do you meaningfully engage with 25k followers if you are a business on Twitter or with the 10k account holders who liked your business on Facebook? These are essential questions. One specific concept from PR theory that helps with the background of this strategy for purposeful engagement is the Two-Way Symmetrical vs. the Two-Way Asymmetrical Model of Public Relations from PR researcher James Grunig. Two-Way Asymmetrical Model In this model of public relations, marketers and PR professionals engage in two-way communication with the audiences. They send crafted messages, receive feedback, do research, but the goal is still persuasion rather that genuine communication and engagement. The slanted downward arrow represents the persuasive element in the figure for this model below. Two-Way Symmetrical Model In this model of public relations, PR professionals and marketers engage in dialogue with the audience and the goal is mutual understanding and purposeful communication where both parties receive benefit. Research is done here as well but rather than using it to determine how to persuade the audience, research is used to learn the direction to take the company’s genuine communication in order to better cater to audience needs and establish how to motivate them to authentic action. Notice the two straight lines. In Action Two-Way symmetric may seem a bit idealist or pie in the sky, but it really is not. It represents the optimal method of interaction that will win customers because they are heard and treated to communication that carries value rather than strict promotion. It represents the long-term rather than short-run mindset that businesses should be taking in relation to the interaction they have with their audience – and there has never been better time where more tools are available to put this sort of purposeful, genuine, two-way, symmetric engagement into action than now. With social media at marketers’ finger-tips, they need to utilize their resources in SEO companies and marketing firms that offer such strategic assistance to implement a meaningful campaign. Businesses need to make a concerted effort to research their audience and know what subject matter will be of value to them. Further, engage with that in mind and most importantly listen, take feedback, and address customer concerns and questions in the social space, making all efforts to connect with as many unhappy or concerned customers as possible. I’ve been pretty successful in making friends throughout my life. I’m actually pretty cool; but, that’s for me to know and others to notice.  In social life, I can be a bit lax, allowing things to happen at a gradual pace.  I’m a tough sell.  I’m not going to ‘be down’ with just anyone.  In my professional life, things are a bit different, warranting a mixture of friendly and professional sentiments; but, I’m very similar to other professionals in that regard too.  I’m not going to be ‘cool’ with just anyone.  If I did want to begin a relationship, I would go about it in the following manner. The Elephant in the Room Have you ever engaged someone in conversation, knowing there is an ulterior motive for the union, yet it goes ‘unpublished’ in conversation.  It makes for an awkward guessing game of what the other person is thinking.  Be honest whenever approaching or PR pitching another professional.  Would you like their help?  Would you like them to read your blog?  Would you like to be considered as a source in an article?  All of these ‘selfish’ desires are acceptable; however, don’t ‘beat around the bush.’  Just be direct.  Being direct doesn’t guarantee a disarming welcome; but, it does let the other person know you’re a straight shooter, honest, and not wasting their time. Some time ago, I wanted to guest post on Mike King’s blog.  I hit him up in an email; and, though may have been a bit complimentary in the opening, I was succinct in my intentions.  I wanted a social media post on ipullrank’s blog; however, it was important to offer something to Mike’s readers too. Why else would he accept if I wasn’t creating some sort of value?  Mike posted on the wrong and right way to ask for a guest post. Creating Value My mom thinks I’m special; that goes along with the job.  I know.  Do others?  Perhaps, but it’s because I earned their respect.  I did; I inspired; I worked; I expressed; I did a number of things to openly demonstrate (out in the practical, wide-open world) I can offer some sort of value.  Think of other professionals as active musicians.  By adding your presence, does their professional world become more harmonious?  If not, they’re likely to want you to ‘sit this number out.’  Maybe you can try-out again when you have something of value to offer. Value is subjective; but, the need to offer ‘something’ is an objective reality.  What can you offer? -          Humor (maybe you make them laugh with your take on the industry) -          Research (maybe you’ve crunched a lot of data, elucidating a new trend or previously unseen ‘truth’) -          Exposure (maybe you have a high number of followers and can introduce a personality to a new pool of subscribers and vice versa) -          Guidance (perhaps you have experience in a particular area and can offer insight) Think about what you can add.  It’s a delicate dance of give and take.  If you’re not offering anything valuable, there’s no reason for professionals to jump at the chance to ‘make friends.’  Many will question why you thought a union with them was apropos in the first place.  Have you researched? Do Research I recently read a great explanation of why doing your homework in a respective vertical is important.  You see, it’s not about ‘just getting exposure.’  It’s about finding the right fit; it’s about making the right kind of relationships.  I’m a writer.  Is making a contact with NASA the right fit though NASA is an incredibly respected entity?  Unless NASA wants me to help them with content marketing, the relationship is ill fitting.  I’d be better off finding better niches, befitting to my networking wishes. Check out Chris Dyson’s post on chasing footprints for linkbuilding.  Knowing the right paths to venture is crucial.  Next, don’t forget to familiarize yourself with the personality of interest.  That’s how you would normally go about making relations and conversation, right?  Consider the alternative:    Heather Lloyd-Martin ? @heatherlloyd If you are going to pitch me, at least check out my freakin’ site first. Relation Building You’ve heard of link building, the reason why many people approach others for immediate connections.  Awesome, you’ve made a connection and got a valuable link.  The link is good in and out itself; but, I liken the process as getting the opportunity to shake the Dali Lama’s hand but not engaging him in conversation. The reason it’s so important to research relations above, is because like online marketing, relations take time to build momentum and strength.  What’s better, getting one guest post link or cultivating a relationship, resulting in future guest spots, insight and guidance, introduction to other ‘doors’ of opportunity and personalities, etc?  Lightning storms are pretty and exciting; but, the excitement is short-lived.  I’d rather invest in my time in building lasting weather patterns. Pro tip:  PR (I think of it as peer relations) is not for everyone.  Are you stuck in a connection rut?  Do you wonder why you and yours are shunned by others?  Something is off; you’re doing something wrong. In Pakistan, it has become a common evil that primarily stems from this so-called class difference. General masses of Pakistan are living on the two extremes and it has become very difficult to get rid of discrimination. Nonetheless, it is difficult but not impossible to get rid of this social evil which is creating a wide gulf between people and is creating a feeling of hate in their hearts. The existence of discrimination in our society can be found in various forms. Those people who are rich or have established a higher position in society on the basis of wealth and power do not even like to think about the downtrodden class. Rich people hate the poor and often behave them in a completely inhuman way. This behaviour of the rich brings bad feelings in the hearts of the poor and the gap between these two classes grows bigger. The middle class that always remains busy in maintaining their status by hook or by crook is also responsible for this discrimination. People who belong to middle class always support the rich and try to avoid the poor in order to gain personal benefits. One of the many personal advantages is to gain bribery, which is the most common form of corruption. Whereas, talking about the officials of different government departments also give importance to those people who have a rich physical appearance. They always talk to them nicely. When they deal with a poor man, they always become indifferent and often rebuke them in an insulting way. Such a discriminating behaviour of officials is stretching the gap between the rich and the poor. An important example of discrimination in this country is that the rich always do wrong but never get punishment because of their wealth and power. Then again, when a poor man commits a mistake, he pays a severe price to that mistake, whether intentional or un-intentional. That means the law is made only for the poor, not for the rich, as the socially well off people always remain beyond the reach of the law. Another key factor in this regard is the education system of Pakistan which creates huge gap between the students of private institutes and public institutes. It gives birth to inferiority complex among those who cannot afford to take admission in an English medium school or who do not have a strong family background. Nevertheless, this huge gap can be reduced to a maximum extent by making reforms in the education system by introducing a single course for private and public institutes. Rule of law is another step which will help in shrinking the class discrimination.
