Historierne vi alle husker og fortæller videre er som regel dem, hvor vores hovedperson fuldt ud lever op til rock 'n roll myten om sex, stoffer og et liv i overhalingsbanen.   Det liv langt de fleste trods alt  føler sig fascineret af på behørig afstand med fast job, børn, en vielsesring og stationcar.   Saint Rebel proklamerer straks ”Let's rock 'n roll” efter ganske få sekunder af debuten The Battle Of Saints And Sinners, og så er dagsordenen sådan set sat for de 10 numre der udgør albummet. Kvintetten har tidligere huseret i København under navnet KoLeN' men besluttede da heldigvis at ændre det til noget mere mundret.   Rock n' roll står for mig som noget, der gerne må være lidt farligt, rebelsk og med et glimt i øjet for at det virker autentisk, med den ofte meget macho-prægede lyrik, og de klichéer, der uvilkårligt hører sig til i genren. Desværre opfylder The Battle Of Saints And Sinners ikke mange af mine kriterier for en autentisk rock eller hardrock udgivelse.   Saint Rebel læner sig meget op ad den amerikanske rock, der har været arvtageren efter den store grunge-bølge, der prægede en stor del af 90'erne. Måske vil Saint Rebel gerne lyde som Guns N' Roses eller Mötley Crüe, men i mine ører ender de mere et sted i nærheden af Nickelback eller Alter Bridge. Det bliver aldrig rigtig nærværende og hvor er det farlige, det rebelske og det fanden-i-voldske? Det drukner i det alt for pæne materiale drengene har skrevet.   Lyden og produktionen er udmærket, men også meget pæn og nysselig. Derfor kommer det til at virke påtaget når Saint Rebel forsøger at give den gas på eksempelvis åbningsnummeret ”Always Alone.” Jeg siger ikke man skal stå med en flaske Jack D i hånden for at spille rock, men på den anden side hjælper det måske en anelse, at der sidder en djævel på skulderen frem for en engel. Uden man behøver ligge på gulvet som en fuld David Hasselhoff, hvis pinlige samtale med sin datter er samplet på ”Wasted.”   Jonas Kaas' vokal er fyldig, men med en påtaget hæshed og overdreven amerikansk intonering, der på balladen ”The Dying Child”  fremstår som en karikatur på den følsomme rockfyr. Når albummet slutter med ”Sell My Soul,” komplet med et jublende publikum, og den selvforherligende ”You Will Know My Name” er det enten udtryk for lidt glimt i øjet eller galoperende storhedsvanvid; jeg satser på det første mulighed, som anmelderen der sikkert tager alting for seriøst.   The Battle Of Saints And Sinners står for mig som et temmelig kønsløst album, der er hørt utallige gange før. Jeg er sikker på det fungerer på en scene, og en tjans som opvarmning for D.A.D. ville utvivlsomt vinde dem mange nye tilhængere, men som album er der ganske enkelt for mange tomme fagter i luften.
