The NFL draft for those that don’t know is a 3 day selection process of the best college players (more details here). It is also the latest milestone in what has become 24/7/365 sports coverage of the sport. The sport has become HUGE commercially, defying the recession and maintaining a vice grip on millions of fans around the world. Nike have taken over as the official kit supplier, from Reebok (details here). There had been numerous rumours of crazy kit designs, but when Nike unveiled their initial kit designs – only the Seattle Seahawks went for the full Nike treatment. And there’s no second guessing a Nike overhaul – it was presented in a pretty exciting way! The problem for those expecting a plethora of fresh designs was that Nike cannot make the decision for the teams, the teams have the final say in designs and most of them remained pretty similar. Nike trotted out the expected lines about the technology etc etc…to be fair it wasn’t their fault. But when push comes to shove – they have still managed to pull off a great promo vid/commercial which leaves you in no doubt that they know how to make fans excited! See for yourself! Back in 2005 he founded the brand(s) with BAPE founder, Nigo, and after a failed collaboration with Reebok, the two of them finally released BBC/Ice Cream in 2005. The designs were cool and they worked very well for the time? The only problem was that the quality of some several products were SH*T! Pharrell and the rest of N.E.R.D were very cool back then, so the clothes sold well. The prices were expensive and the quality sucked, but despite those facts people still bought it even though they didn?t have any good reason to (other then the hype). Now, the following collection was different? The quality of t-shirts, hoodies etc. were very good, the prices were still a little extreme, but they had a great buzz around them, and overall BBC/Ice Cream was cool and it sold well! It kept on going like this for a few years, but when times (fashion) started changing, they didn?t, and for that reason BBC/Ice Cream isn?t even a relevant brand when discussing urban fashion anymore. Not only are the designs outdated, their website looks unprofessional and the prices are still too ‘jiggy’, while other, newer and cooler brands are doing it better, classier and cheaper. So, what?s left to do for BBC? Back in August, Jay-Z tried to save the brand by partnering up with them. It did catch some attention, but it doesn?t seem like anything has changed so far, and to be fair, why would it help having Jay as a partner when it comes to clothing? Rocawear seems to be the only failing project from his side, so even though he probably donated a great amount of money, it?s not the best look. What they are currently trying to do is to save the last piece of a good reputation, by letting for example Mark McNairy design a line for them. (The Bee Line). Now, that?s a good look, but the problem is that BBC/Ice Cream already hit the mainstream online shops like Karmaloop, Caliroots etc. and with the same prices as they use to sell their products for. It’s to little to late! For me as a prime target consumer, all of this is very confusing? It started off by being a Reebok failure, to then being one of the most exclusive street wear brands. Now it?s shit, and nobody can tell whether it will die completely or become something once again. Will these failure brands ever stop?
