My memory of searching for the first rung on some ladder of success resurfaced as I spoke with Nomoya Tinch Malcolm, a program director at Junior Achievement of Greater Washington who matches mentors with schools and young people to prepare them for the real world. She also helps young adults learn how to handle money, balance a checkbook and use a credit card responsibly. She helps them answer real-life questions, such as: What kind of car could they afford on a $40, 000 annual salary? (Answer: not much of one. )#) What’ s a mutual fund? How do you pay a utility bill? How much are your taxes? How do you become an entrepreneur? How much can you save, and where do you stash it? Malcolm, 30, who’ s married and has a young child, has come to appreciate the importance of money since leaving her teaching job at D. C. public charter schools five years ago to join Junior Achievement. She understands compound interest and the value of owning assets — and that wealth creation starts by buying assets at a young age. “ Unfortunately, I learned a little too late that you spend your younger years working really hard so you can enjoy your later years, ” said the Howard University graduate (English/­ political science), who grew up in Northeast Washington in a family of artists, educators and government employees. “ What I’ ve discovered with Junior Achievement is that education is no longer the great equalizer. ” Instead, she said, the key to success in a free-market society “ is a solid understanding of this country’ s economic system. If I knew it in my 20s, I think I would have done more. I.  .  . was taught the cream will rise to the top. But honestly, you have to go after the things you really want. And a foundation in business and economics makes you more aggressive and gives you an ability to make things happen tomorrow. ” I wish Malcolm was around when I was 16. “ You have to go after the things you really want. ” That is the whole point of Junior Achievement. The nonprofit organization, started in 1919 by Theodore Vail, the chief executive of AT& T, and a couple of other philanthropists, exposes kids to business and money. It’ s three-pronged goal is to teach financial literacy, work readiness and entre­ pre­ neur­ ship. “ Kids may be thinking about becoming a teacher, doctor, lawyer or sports star, ” said Ed Grenier, president and chief executive of Junior Achievement of Greater Washington. “ We want businessperson and entrepreneur to be in the mix as well. ” Finance ParkJunior Achievement runs a boot camp for students, Finance Park, at its Frost-Woodson campus in Fairfax County. Finance Park, which was built with a $2. 5million gift from McLean-based Capital One, looks like a school from the outside but is something closer to a mini-mall inside. It whets kids’ appetite for making money by teaching them something about it. During a recent interview on CNN, Slash revealed that he does not remember all the things that happened between him and Rose when he parted ways with the American hard rock band. ?It?s a lot of attention put on a lot of negative stuff. And granted, the negative stuff existed, and might still exist or whatever, but dwelling on that stuff ? All things considered, I left the band in 1996, so we?re talking a pretty long amount of time that I haven?t really even focused on that? ?Basically, it was just that I?m done. And it wasn?t even me necessarily leaving the band, it was not continuing on with the new band that Axl put together that he was now at the helm of, which was the new Guns N? Roses. I was given a contract to basically join his new band, and it took about 24 hours before I decided, I think this is the end of the line?, Slash said. Det beklager jeg, det er kun midltertidigt! Men da Mother Lewinsky sendte mig en personlig mail med et link til den første sang fra deres hånd, vidste jeg, at jeg ikke kunne hånde hold fingrene fra tasterne. Mother Lewinsky består af sangeren Marc Facchini-Madsen, der også synger i ?Mescalin, Baby?, trommeslageren Michael Vitus fra surf-jazz bandet ?Surf in Stereo? og mig, Søren Stensby, der er violinist i ?Tako Lako?. De konstituerer et nyt og anderledes pop/rock-band, der har som mål, at bruge så meget strygere som overhovedet muligt, men samtidig at holde en rå og upoleret tilgang til musikken. Jeg elsker strygere og tanken om, at de får en dominerende plads i rytmisk musik, lyder aldeles forfriskende og peger på et højt ambitionsniveau i forhold til at eksperimentere med genren. Første udspil imponerer da også med sit nøgne udtryk, som på trods af sin skrøbelighed stadig har rigeligt med nerve og power. Trommerne er ikke eksisterende, men det er alligevel i den grad rytmisk! Og norske Deathcrush er da også lige til at knuselske, hvis man som mig elsker støjrock. Det skramler og det er helt tydeligt at høre, at Sonic Youth ikke har levet forgæves (hvis man da ellers overhovedet kunne være i tvivl om det). Det er så cool, det er rytmisk og støjende og vredt og snerrende, det er fuld fart ud over stepperne og ind i den mørkeste klub. Deathcrush skal helt sikkert nok levere blodige øregange, når de spiller på årets Roskilde Festival. Deathcrush spiller på festivalen som en del af Roskilde Rising, som er festivalens rygstød til en række upcoming nordiske bands, som spiller på Pavilion Junior under festivalens warm up dage. The band?s last studio album, Time for Annihilation, hit the stores in August 2010. Jacoby Shaddix, lead vocalist, has confirmed the news and has revealed that the fans should expect the new record to be in the market late this year, though; he denied giving out the exact date. ?We don?t know the name of the album; we?re still going back and forth about what we feel like the album should be called. The release date is going to be sometime in September. We don?t have a date yet, but sometime in September. And the first single, we?re still trying to whittle down to the final right now??, Shaddix stated.
