<title>Social Mobilization in slums of Islamabad ? what good have development organizations ...</title>
            <link>http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Newspakistanpk/~3/cH2xqnHDDx8/</link>
<description>Social Mobilization in slums of Islamabad ? what good have development organizations contributed to our society
Social mobilization refers to the idea of sensitizing and mobilizing a society or community to address the social issues it faces. It is believed that without having a community on board, the effectiveness of development work undertaken
for its common good cannot be achieved in its true essence. It is for this purpose that all the NGOs, CBO?s and development or civil society organizations, before initiating with a project in a community or settlement, take its dwellers/ stakeholders on board
and try to proceed with every activity with their complete consent.
This entire exercise is deemed necessary not only because it enhances effectiveness of the development work, but also because it inculcates a sense of ownership among the people and encourages them to monitor progress of the project
and to provide their input to keep it on track.
Although every NGO, CBO and development or civil society organization is well aware of this fact, yet many of them do not regard its importance. Because if they did so, none of them could have proactively, although unintentionally,
killed the sense of collective responsibility of the communities they intend to work with by making false promises. You may feel bemused while trying to comprehend these points. But I believe you may get essence of the idea after going through the following
 lines.
Recently, while working on a project on social accountability in education, I had a chance to interact with the communities in two of the slums in Islamabad. Enthusiastic about working on a relatively new idea in Pakistan that
could set a precedent for reforming entire education system in the country; we started working on the project by organizing periodic community meetings. Before going to the people, the research team to which I was a part had envisioned an active community
participation without much effort. However, when we actually got into the work, it seemed more of a challenging task.
Initially, I was bemused as to how people could remain indifferent to an issue that had a lot to do with their children?s education. Moreover, how could they offer a cold shoulder to the issues like the education of their daughters
and getting rid of corruption that had infused into the public schools where teachers would openly ask the students to join their tuition centers for better results in the exams?
However, as the project activities lingered on and coordination with the community members increased, gradually, their cooperation with the staff working in the field increased and finally, there came the day when we had the desired
level of participation from the local stakeholders. But this entire community sensitization activity could at best be described as painfully slow. To the project implementation team that had experience of working with the communities across Pakistan on dozens
of projects, this phenomenon depicted by the dwellers of slums in Islamabad was surprising, and naturally, they wanted to investigate the reasons behind it.
While digging deeper, and discussing the observations with community members including religious leaders and socially and politically influencing individuals, it prevailed that the dwellers of slums in Islamabad have become skeptical
of the NGOs and thus, they are not willing to believe them anymore. The reasons behind this increased skepticism are also quite interesting. In words of a pastor at Hansa Colony, ?we have dozens of NGOs? workers visiting us every week, all of them coming to
us with tall claims and huge promises of initiating development works but most of the times none of them would keep their words. &amp;nbsp;Initially, after believing and mocked by most of them, now the community members do not believe them, and thus, they do not lend
an ear to what they say or the dreams they try to make us see and trust in.?
In words of a local political leader, ?NGOs take funds from donors in our name, but after securing the money, they would never come back to us. We are a permanent source of generating income for them, then why would they want our
conditions to be improved.? To him, ?on papers, hundreds of projects have been implemented in the slums of Islamabad by NGOs and development organizations; but can anyone ask them how much difference they have been able to create so far? Our lives have been
all the same, with virtually no improvement that can be attributed to the projects that are promised by the NGOs but that would never get implemented.?
For us, the researchers working on social accountability of education sector, this was a reality-check movement to hold ourselves ? the development organizations, accountable of what we commit to our donors, communities and other
stakeholders and what we actually deliver.
Recently, the government has decided to devise and legislate over a mechanism that would keep check on financial affairs of the Non Government Organizations. To me, besides government, the communities should also be given the right
to hold these organizations accountable of what they actually deliver to the society. Only by doing so will we be able to stop those NGOs working in the field that are not only promoting corrupt practices but are also brining bad names to the organizations
that are genuinely aimed at elevating the social and economic status of the marginalized sections of the society and that are striving to restore ideal human rights conditions in Pakistan.
If a self analysis at this stage is not done, and an honest attempt to improve state of affairs on NGOs part is not made, we probably are on the way to add to the skepticism about us already prevailing among the common people of
 the society.

<title>Do You Require Facebook Passwords for Those Applicants You Interview?</title>
            <link>http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/whatworksforbusiness/~3/f5knubFRVdk/</link>
<description>As media reports have shown us lately, more employers are asking job interview candidates to provide them with Facebook, Twitter and other social media log-in information in order to view private accounts during the background check process.
So, how much damage can a personal Facebook or Twitter account do to someone?s chances of getting a job? To those that think not much, think again.
As more job candidates are discovering, a questionable tweet or sharing a picture of one in a drunken predicament can have very damaging effects on one?s ability to get a job and/or even get in an interview for that matter.
But before your small business decides to spend time on the personal social media accounts of those you are considering interviewing, think about the possible legal ramifications of such actions.
While this is still a very gray area in terms of legalities, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other groups are letting both the potential employee and the employer that they are watching this recent trend.
Did Maryland Officials Go Too Far?
Much attention was directed recently at the Maryland Department of Corrections, where officials asked applicants and even a number of those already employed there to willingly provide their Facebook passwords. According to prison officials, they wanted to view the private accounts to be sure none of the potential guards and some of those already working there did not have any gang ties.
Since then, Maryland state legislators unveiled a bill that would ban businesses from requiring applicants to provide passwords to their private Facebook accounts.  Meantime, legislators in Illinois, California, Minnesota and New Jersey have followed the lead, though none of the bills are law to this point.
Not to be left out of the news, Facebook has publicly stated that it will take employers to court when they seek such information, stating it is a violation of the social media giant?s policies. In a blog post on Facebook, Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan wrote ?If you are a Facebook user, you should never have to share your password.?
Careful When Rejecting Candidates
Legal rumblings can become an even bigger issue should an employer be perceived as rejecting an applicant because they find something on the individual through a share or tweet.
Per example, if a business owner sees that a potential employee has certain religious convictions they are discussing on Facebook, the employer cannot turn them down due to their religious beliefs. Assuming the applicant did not discuss religion during the interview; the employer has to come up with a legitimate reason (qualifications, personality, etc.) as to why they would not hire that person, not because of some posts they saw on Facebook or another site.
With all that being said, employers must walk a tightrope here due to the fact that a negligent hire (for example, applicant made some rumblings about a past employer that could be considered threatening) could end up in a lawsuit should they hire that person, then the employee does or says something bad while under their employment. An employee could bring a liability suit against the company, claiming the employer should have known about the applicant?s questionable behavior due to some social media posts they made prior to being hired.
As an employer, it is advisable to tread carefully when asking for personal information on potential hires.
The first approach would be to look for and/or ask for a candidate?s LinkedIn information, given many applicants will be more than willing to show off their business profiles.
If an applicant is reluctant to give up a Facebook or Twitter log-in, don?t automatically discount this person during the interview process. Not every applicant that is reluctant to provide such information is a lock to be a bad hire.
With all that goes into trying to find the right people to work for you, weigh the total package, not just the social media one.
Remember, the last thing you want to do as an employer is come off as being anti-social.
If that?s the case, that word could spread quickly in today?s electronic information age, doing more damage than attempting to discount someone over a questionable social media post.
So, has your company ever asked a job applicant for a social media site password? If so, what was their response?

<title>Gentleman Branding ?Is Your Company Worthy of a Tip o? the Cap?</title>
            <link>http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/WebimaxSEOBlog/~3/zM8l1WBwq9c/gentleman-branding-is-your-company-worthy-of-a-tip-o-the-cap</link>
            <description>

				Tweet&amp;nbsp;
How would you like to save marketing dollars by getting your brand valued within its community?  Wait.  The gentleman branding process doesn?t work for every person or brand.  There&amp;#8217;s something I would like to point out to business people, regardless of your industry.  There&amp;#8217;s one aspect which all of the online marketing, SEO, social media, black/white-hat tactics can&amp;#8217;t offer your company?personality.  I try to pass on sentiments of great people and branding onto readers; but, I honestly can&amp;#8217;t ingrain or grant character; that&amp;#8217;s the man-in-the-mirror&amp;#8217;s job.

Gentleman Branding?
I liken gentleman (or woman) branding to white and black-hat sentiments.  White-hat and black-hat are adjectives rooted in the SEO industry.  The former label is associated to ethical practices while the latter gets practitioners thinking of questionable and unscrupulous practices.  Let&amp;#8217;s be honest.  I can&amp;#8217;t definitively determine your brand&amp;#8217;s intentions; but, mama didn&amp;#8217;t raise a fool.  I&amp;#8217;m pretty people savvy, even online.  After some time, I see your brand and associated personalities?as they are; so do your brand followers and consumers.  Are you leveraging me or my brand for ulterior purposes?  I hope not.  Doing so sheds different colored lights on you and your company&amp;#8217;s image.  Don&amp;#8217;t be a fool; consumers and cohorts discuss such impressions.

Support Brand Evangelism
PointBlankSEO aka Jon Cooper posted earlier today on this topic.  His article contains good insight about appreciating consumers and brand champions (whether they&amp;#8217;re paying or non-paying supporters).  Does your brand or content attract a particular sub group of followers, ones who usually comment, tweet, follow, like, speak well of, and engage in all of those other behaviors, which give your brand the &amp;#8216;warm fuzzies&amp;#8217;?  How does your brand show appreciation?  As Jon addresses, noticing those who notice you makes for a better community and facilitates branding.  Another Jon, Jonathan Allen of Search Engine Watch, does a great job of appreciating SEW&amp;#8217;s brand followers and &amp;#8216;evangelists.&amp;#8217;  Take notice of the Twitter handles of Jonathan Allen and SEW, and how fans and brand supporters are appreciated and addressed.

Lend a Helping Hand
It&amp;#8217;s highly likely there are other personalities within your brand&amp;#8217;s space.  Those who could use help understanding the industry as well as tactics and best practices.  Company owners and practitioners, remember when you were younger, doing something mischievous, having your parents remind you that you are a reflection on them? (I hated that one; I was a toddler outlaw)  The same holds true in the professional sphere.
What professionals do, how they act, is a reflection on their brand.  Let&amp;#8217;s give another real-life example.  I had a genuine, professional question, and asked for help.  Why did I ask Chris specifically?  He knows his stuff for one; more importantly (to me), he genuinely wants to help.  I&amp;#8217;ve asked others for help, getting no response whatsoever.  The &amp;#8216;no responsers&amp;#8217; still have my respect as far as knowledge of the industry; I&amp;#8217;m not really sure of their trains of logic, but that&amp;#8217;s why they were asked to begin with.  What do you think I think of their personalities and their brand after asking for help and getting ignored?  Kindness is a timeless fashion&amp;#8230;

<title>Why Your CEO Should Be Active On Social Media [Study]</title>
            <link>http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/mindjumpers/~3/1PxcnSvmkxA/</link>
            <description>Tweet
One of the basic steps for brands to take on social media is to enhance brand awareness by focusing on spokesperson visibility. Lots of brands encourage their CEOs and CMOs to join Twitter with their individual profiles and talk about the company from an insider perspective. The need for the top officials to communicate on behalf of the company becomes more apparent through the study done by social media branding firm BRANDfog. Brands like Intel already have their executives from different verticals on board on Twitter.
The study reveals that consumers and employees regard company leaders who engage on social media positively.

Survey Results:
The majority of survey respondents, 78%, said CEO participation in social media leads to better communication, while 71% said it leads to improved brand image and 64% said it provides more transparency.
In terms of importance, 86% of respondents rated CEO social media engagement as somewhat important, very important or mission-critical. CEO activity on social networks also appears to influence employees? faith in their company. The study findings indicate that 82% of employee respondents trust a company more, when the CEO and leadership team communicates via social media.

How the presence of top officials effects the purchase decisions?
Apart from reinforcing the faith in company policies, company?s social media presence also influences purchase decisions. The majority of BRANDfog survey respondents (77%) are more likely or much more likely to buy from a company whose CEO uses social media to clearly define company values and leadership principles. And 94% said C-suite social media participation enhances a brand image.

Getting a CEOs onboard with social media:
Selling social to top executives still remains a challenge for many companies. According to an Accenture study of social media among B2B marketers, 31% of respondents said they need increased CEO conviction in order to make social media efforts more effective.
Another examination of marketer priorities, by The CMO Council, reveals that social media is a priority for engagement and buzz-building among 60% of senior marketers worldwide.
As evident form the survey results, there is a pressing need for CEOs to be active in social media. This not only reinstates the consumer faith in the company, but also makes the CEOs more aware of social media as a domain to share opinions. At Mindjumpers, our CEO Jonas Klit Nielsen is an active blogger as well as tweeter. He loves to share his experiences and opinions on the latest topics in social media.
Benefits of CEO blogging and being active on social media:

Being present on social media keeps the CEOs better connected and aware of customer opinion.
It helps in projecting the company as a thought leader and innovator in its sector.
Helps in establishing and maintaining direct connections with top media and analysts.
Helps the CEOs in sharing their experience as a professional in the field.

So, is your CEO present on social media yet?

            <link>http://laurajul.dk/2012/03/28/coca-cola-papertweetos/</link>
            <description>

Every time there is a soccer match where the Argentinean National Team plays, hundreds of people writes thousands of encouragement messages on social networks. Unfortunately those messages are not read by the players. To solve that problem, Coca-Cola created ?Papertweetos?.
Yes&amp;#8230; a waste of paper, I think. But an interesting idea indeed.

            <title>Hvad er Social Analytics?</title>
            <link>http://linkd.dk/hvad-er-social-analytics/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=hvad-er-social-analytics</link>
