Have you ever wondered how genuine that smile really is? If your intuition isn’t stellar at gauging real versus fake smiles, this information might be of interest to you: Researchers at MIT have developed a computer algorithm to distinguish honest-to-goodness smiles from those simply trying to mask frustration. Experiments conducted at MIT’s Media Lab asked people to act out expressions of delight or frustration — and webcams captured their reactions. Researchers then watched the participants either fill out an online form purposefully designed to cause frustration, or invited them to watch a video designed to draw out delight. The researchers captured and logged each smile.

Yahoo has decided to discontinue production of Yahoo Livestand, a newsreading app for the iPad launched just six months ago. The news was announced in a post to Yahoo’s corporate blog on Friday, leading up to three-day holiday weekend in the U.S. The app, which was positioned as a competitor to Flipboard, Zite and AOL Editions (among others), served up content from various Yahoo verticals and content partners, including Forbes and the NFL. It was also capable of delivering a more “personalized” set of news based on your Facebook activity and your reading habits. In the post, Yahoo said it planned to discontinue or consolidate a number of its products over the rest of year

Leveraging Your Brand & the Additional Revenue That Licensing Them Can Bring

TweetLeveraging Your Brand & the Additional Revenue That Licensing Them Can Bring was originally posted on the WebiMax SEO Blog
When brands are built up effectively over time and used purposefully, they can have a tremendous impact on the company and deliver considerable financial gain, supplementing the primary revenue generation from the sale of their actual products. Ford, one of the biggest and most recognizable name brands in the country and world, is a shining example of this. The Ford brand is worth billions and the company is a leader in the process of licensing out the various elements of the brand. Their activity provides lessons for other companies both large and small in how they can leverage the equity they have built in their brand for financial gain and valuable exposure.
Yes, Ford is enormous and many companies do not have the same name recognition (and everything that goes with it) or find themselves in such a position as Ford does. They built up to their current position over time, creating slogans such as “Built Ford Tough” and establishing the “tough, long-lasting, strong” identity that they have been promoting for years. With that said, other companies can strategically build their name in the same way to represent something, an idea, a feeling, an emotion – marketing, advertising, and branding 101.
Branding Empire
According to a recent Forbes article, the company has 400 licenses at present and has granted roughly 18,000 product approvals during the past year, which is a sizeable increase from 3,000 from two years prior. 45 million pieces of merchandise that had the Ford brand were sold last year totaling $1.5 billion. This is a lot of money to say the least from an additional revenue stream.
What types of products does the brand show up in? Well the “Built Ford Tough” slogan was licensed to Forever 21, a young women’s clothing store for one, another is ford-branded Tervis Tumblers for Bed, Bath, & Beyond. But the big winners are those that replicate the products, the cars themselves. This is exemplified in licensing the sounds and look of the vehicles for video-games, like the 2013 Ford Focus ST for the Forza 4 game. Similarly, they have been traditionally doing this with toy versions of the cars and trucks, most popular being the remote-controlled vehicles. This makes a connection to the actual products they sell. Jim Farley, Ford’s global CMO, describes how interest from various “licensees” to use a company’s brand is one of the best ways to understand and measure the value and health of the brand.
Takeaway – Building the Brand
The lesson here is the value in investing in building the brand – making it a priority. For smaller companies this starts with beginning with creating a core message and making sure in all communications, the company details the name, what they do, and the core message/slogan/why they are different. From there, local companies can solidify themselves as the place for a certain product or the place to support a local area business.
Companies can lean on reputable marketing agencies and SEO companies in order strategically build the message between social platforms and have it stick with customers, the hardest part. Social media is perfect for this and several platforms can be leveraged alongside each other to support the campaign. Reach out to us via our contact page for more information on how this can be done on both the small and large scale.

TweetDon’t Panic: A SMB Owner Guide to Surviving the Facebook Blues was originally posted on the WebiMax SEO Blog
The last two weeks have been an incredibly stressful time for every web-focused company. Between Facebook’s recent woes concerning its IPO and General Motors pulling out of its in-network marketing, there’s been more than a little bit of uncertainty in the SEO and online marketing communities as of late. Many of our readers no doubt have their own growing concerns over the state of all-things social media and search engine-related. While current events may have everyone second guessing the viability of their social network strategies, in truth there is no reason to panic.
What about Facebook?
Anyone who watches major news network programming or reads the latest headlines will be familiar with the immense amount of criticism falling on Facebook at the moment. Over the course of the last seven days, Facebook’s underwhelming stock performance has led to a lot of serious questions regarding the effectiveness of the company’s in-network ads as well as whether its mobile efforts will pay off in the end. It’s gotten to the point where even notable SEO experts are making similar inquiries.
Although Facebook’s future is uncertain, that doesn’t mean that businesses should shy away from the social media site here and now. Many of the arguments taking place between pundits over Facebook are based on speculation, and the possible outcomes of these predictions won’t come to pass for months or years to come. While it’s easy to fall prey to the sort of fear-mongering that is common to network television, small business owners need to remember that FB will continue to be a valuable asset to their online marketing efforts.
How is that Done?
If anything, companies operating on Facebook should be focusing less on their in-network PPC campaigning and more on building up a solid social media following. The world’s most popular social network recently hit the 900 million user mark, and this milestone shouldn’t go ignored. In particular, business owners will want to remain dedicated in their efforts to expand the size of their follower base while simultaneously engaging those users that subscribe to their news feeds. This can be done in a number of ways:

Search for groups or organizations that may share interests that match what your company specializes in. Do what you can to interact with their members and gain their attention.
Post original and interesting content that is worth reading. This can be done by posting links to blogs and other company properties that may host these materials.
Comment on breaking industry news that has everyone talking. Users will often take the time to add their thoughts to these posts if they are asked for their opinion.

Despite Facebook’s current predicament, the fact is that the social network still has every bit of impact it had before the company went public. The only difference is the amount of discussion taking place at the moment. Should readers have any additional questions or comments regarding their Facebook operations, they can contact me directly at jwersits@webimax.com.

The era of social business has arrived

Forget social media and start thinking social business. That was the message of this year’s Community Conference, hosted by Seismonaut, and which a bunch of us attended on Tuesday.
And while may that yet prove simplistic, it is clear that Social Business Design as a discipline – adopted and practised by some of the world’s leading organisations – is now here to stay. (Good definitions in Danish here and English here.)
By way of evidence of Social Business Design’s emergence into the mainstream, USA Today ran a front page story last week that contained the following snippets:
“Beyond advertising on Facebook or Twitter, companies are using social networks to build teams that solve problems faster, share information better among their employees and partners, bring customer ideas for new product designs to market earlier, and redesign all kinds of corporate software in Facebook’s easy-to-learn style.”
And:
“After a slow start, Big Business is embracing social media in a big way. Forrester Research says the sales of software to run corporate social networks will grow 61% a year and be a $6.4 billion business by 2016.”
Published on the same day was this Harvard Business Review piece detailing the six key trends of the ‘social business revolution’.
A few days later Forbes detailed a major IBM study that found that companies whose CEOs are active in the social space are likely to be more competitive.
And yesterday Techcrunch reported on Oracle’s 300 million dollar purchase of the social media marketing platform Vitrue, a sale which in Techcrunch’s words ‘continued the trend of large, old-world Internet marketing companies buying their way into social after being slow to adopt’.
The latter followed close on the heels of the sale of Copenhagen’s own Podio - a ‘social work platform’ with a vision to change the way people work no less – to Citrix.
It’s clear then that, perhaps grudgingly, definitely warily, the corporate world is beginning to see ‘social’ as something beyond a Facebook page. A point rammed home by Peter Kim in his keynote of the Community Conference. (Peter is Chief Strategy Office at Dachis Group, the company which has done most to formalise the discipline of Social Business Design.)
As well as promoting his new book ‘Social Business by Design‘, Peter also focused on several of what he calls the ten tenets of social business.
My main takeaways from his talk:
> Social Business Design is the strategic application of social computing to enterprise challenges.
> Early experiments were trial and error but we’ve reached a point where we cultivate planned outcomes and increase the likelihood success through best practice.
> When practised effectively, social business design is truly integrated and can result in high value, high scale, cost-effective and emergent business outcomes.
> The ROI of social business is quantifiable. (Here’s 101 examples from Peter’s website.)
Following on from Peter was American Express’ Director of Social Engagement who shared some excellent insights into the venerable old company’s social journey, including – somewhat amusingly – the fact that it took them 30 days to agree on their first Tweet.
My main takeaways from Carl’s talk:
> Engagement with social and digital has been the most transformational event in his 14 years at the company.
> The company has seen the limitations of interruptive messaging and believes in social media’s ability to amplify word of mouth
> Amex’ mission in social is tied into its corporate vision and mission – to cement feelings of trust and security and deliver great service – and its goal is to increase brand image and loyalty.
> Amex wants to own the ‘spend graph’, connecting buyers and sellers (owning that relationship and the data it provides which is returned to the merchants)
> Two key success stories were @askamex, a Twitter-based customer service platform and Small Business Saturday, which garnered 1.5million Facebook fans in 3 weeks and created an average 26% increase in revenue for the businesses involved:

Carl’s tips for a brand taking its first steps in social:
- Identify the unmet need
- Prioritise the biggest business opportunities
- Think like a start-up (with an eye to scale)
- Stay authentic
Props to Seismonaut for another excellent conference.

The winning, as well as the nominated, entries all prove that social media has become a global and highly effective marketing tool for brands and organisations around the world, creating amazing results that couldn?t be reached without the power of this media and the people engaging with it.
Two entries, who were both named winners in no less than two categories, were that of K-Swiss: MFCEO created by the agency 72andSunny and the Go Beyond the Cover by Agence Tuxedo. Both cases have created a lot of attention, which I mainly believe is thanks to their untraditional characters. As K-Swiss used provocative and unexpected humour to reach their audience, Dermablend (the brand behind Go Beyond the Cover), used provocative and unexpected elements to create a viral effect of their branded video. With this, both brands succeeded to differentiate themselves from their competitors and reach valuable results. Check out the cases in the videos below:
K-Swiss: MFCEO – Winning entry in Best Campaign and Best Copywriting

Go Beyond The Cover – Winning entry in Best Branded Viral Video and Best Art Direction

A former Manhattan store owner confessed Thursday morning to strangling 6-year-old Etan Patz in 1979 — the boy whose disappearance sparked the now-famous face on the milk carton. If you can’t remember the last time you saw someone’s face on a milk carton, or never even heard of the concept, there’s a reason: Technology and social media have drastically changed how we search for abducted persons. Police are still investigating the Patz case and have yet to confirm whether the Manhattan man’s alleged confession will lead to anything new. But its resurgence has brought attention to the methods now being used to find those who go missing, as well as the future of these alert systems. Amber Alerts, named after 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, kidnapped and murdered in 1996, are the most well-known source of alerts about missing children

Gabe Zichermann is a public speaker, designer, and author of the books Game-Based Marketing and Gamification by Design. Follow him @gzicherm Most of the interest in gamification and user engagement for startups centers on customer acquisition. This is partly because of the short time around startup planning, but also the strong need to show and grow traction as quickly as possible. With startups like Foursquare, Codecademy and StackOverflow using gamification to build unprecedented early customer engagement, it’s no wonder so many founders want to talk about virality.
